The Ultimate Fighter Franchise Changes Continents

Dana White announced that the first ever UFC reality series to shoot abroad is set to take place in Brazil.

The episodes will begin airing in March 2012, with a Finale set tentatively for June 2012. The Finale will feature a fight between the two coaches, Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort. These MMA legends faced off previously at UFC 17.5 in 1998 where Belfort knocked out Silva only 44 seconds into the first round.

The series will be carried in Brazil on the Globo Network. Although it is being speculated that it will be carried on Fuel TV stateside, that has yet to be formally announced.

Jon Jones Will Never Fight Anderson Silva

Coming off of a spectacular victory on an inspiring UFC 140 fight card, there are enough Jon "Bones" Jones story lines to do a daily feature on.

Is he cocky or confident? Was his trainer telling him to check on his defeated foe to "get more fans" wrong? Does he talk too much about his faith? Is he worthy of his #2 pound for pound ranking? Did he disrespect Lyoto Machida at Saturday's fight by letting his unconscious body flop to the floor?

Regardless of your opinion on those questions and the myriad host of others, Jon Jones' star has had a meteoric rise in this coming of MMA age year of 2011.

His UFC 140 2nd round submission of fellow lightweight Lyoto Machida last Saturday was his fourth fight of the year. All four bouts have been against formidable foes.

The year started in February at UFC 126 when he took on Ryan Bader, who was undefeated at the time. Their matchup was billed as one that would produce a contender. That proved to be no hype job. Jones submitted Bader in the 2nd round via guillotine choke, and was quickly thrust into the contender seat.

The following month, Jones got a title shot against lightweight titleholder Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. Jones went after Rua's belt with a vengeance at the UFC 128 blockbuster fight and took it with a 3rd round TKO of the highly experienced Rua. He became the youngest UFC titleholder ever at the age of 23.

It was announced at the end of the fight that Jones would face his then teammate and friend (albeit by then, a strained friend relationship) Rashad Evans. Jones got injured which added fuel to a Twitter feud that was the mother of such feuds between him and Rashad, and prevented the matchup from occurring.

Jones would first defend his new title against none other than Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in September at UFC 135. If anything, the smack tweets accelerated between Jackson and Jones with Jones calling Rampage old and immobile and Jackson calling Jones inexperienced and accused him of sending a spy into his fight camp. Although Jones was noticeably more cautious in the fight, he still ended it early by submitting Rampage via rear naked choke in the 4th round.

The crown jewel though was UFC 140 where he faced Machida who most believe (except two of the three judges) won the first round against Jones. Machida landed kicks and punches in bunches on Jones before Jones submitted him with a 2nd round standing guillotine.

Talk has already bypassed the numerous possible and compelling lightweight matchups and again fans are asking for a duel between Middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Light Heavyweight champ Jon Jones. I don't think this fight will ever happen.

Silva, who is rehabilitating, has a huge hurdle in late spring or so against the hungry victor of the bout between Mark Munoz and Silva's arch nemesis Chael Sonnen. Jones, who is saying he'll take five deserved months off, has many opponents looming on the Light Heavyweight landscape he needs to clear. Jones is 24, and Silva will be 37 when he next fights. Even if Silva can hold on to his belt, he would probably be around 40 by the time that matchup could even take place.

Both fighters also get very vague when asked about this possible matchup due to their mutual respect and friendship.

Shane Carwin Is On The Mend

UFC Heavyweight fighter Shane Carwin had surgery to repair a hernia and a bulging disc in his back. Carwin recently gave an update on his blog saying:

"I am still in recovery mode but I feel a lot better. The surgery was a success. The Doctor said I had a herniated disc that was not viewable with the MRI. The Hernia and the bulging disc were destroying the nerve endings in my back connecting to my spine. These injuries along with years of neglecting the back pain and hernia created packs of arthritis and scar tissue all of which was pressing into my spine."

He seems to also think he may have discovered a reason for his loss to fellow Heavyweight Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 when he was smashing the crap out of Lesnar and the bell seemed to save an exchange of the Heavyweight belt. Carwin came out for the second round and seemed gassed:

"Dr. Chad said that this type of injury will 100% cause lower leg fatigue and even help bring on cardio issues. In the fight with Lesnar my legs were the first things to go. I remember sitting on the bench telling Coach T that I can't feel my legs and that my "legs were done". This could almost certainly be cause by the spine injury I was fighting through."

He goes on to say that he's feeling better every day, will begin rehab this week, and looks forward to returning to the "stinky" gym that he misses.

Carwin is part of an exciting division that includes newly crowned Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, Brock Lesnar, Frank Mir, Big Nog, and newly signed Alistair Overeem.

The Flies Have It, 125 Pound Division Coming To UFC Next Year

After many hints and allegations, it seems that we will be getting Flyweight goodness next year in the UFC. Many fight fans and pundits were surmising that adding the new 125 pound division, promised for over a year, was at least another year off.

It seems that last week's awesome performances at the TUF 14 Finale in the Bantamweight and Featherweight divisions gave the UFC Brass the nudge they've needed to make it happen.

This division almost instantly promises rad fights. Last week's TUF 14 winner John Dodson, Damacio Page, Scott Jorgenson, Manny Gamburyan, and Joseph Benavidez are just a few fighters that will immediately flourish in this new exciting lower weight division.

GSP Tears ACL: End Of A Legend?

It was announced today that UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre tore his ACL. Pierre was scheduled to headline UFC 143 with a title defense against fellow Welterweight Nick Diaz on February 4th of next year.

GSP is reported by UFC President Dana White to be out 10 months, creating an interim belt matchup that will headline UFC 143 between Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit.

This latest injury has this writer wondering if GSP's body, only 30 years old, may be breaking down. This seems absurd since GSP is known for staying in optimum condition and shape at all times. An MMA athlete's body breaks down over time though, and GSP is a mixed martial artist who puts his body through a rigorous cross training wringer. Not everyone is a Randy Couture.

GSP pulled his groin at UFC 100 against Thiago Alves ("I don't care, hit him with it George").

He had an eye injury from a poke in the eye by Jake Shields at UFC 129. Ok, that one isn't a breakdown.

He pulled out of a UFC 137 bout against Condit due to a knee injury.

Now today, he has torn his ACL.

Let's hope he is ok and rehabs well. If it indeed takes 10 months to mend and get another matchup though, it will have been 16 months since GSP's last fight. An eternity in the fast paced and quick evolutionary world of MMA.

Rock'em Sock'em TUF 14 Goodness

I had to take time to swish last Saturdays MMA event around in my mouth and savor the taste rather than guzzle it. Then I had to let it ferment in my mind before I could recap it here. It was a good vintage in a great year of MMA.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 14 Finale had a tough act to follow. A mere two weeks earlier, the headline matchup of UFC 139 between Dan Henderson and Shogun Rua still had the mixed martial arts fan base buzzing and debating whether or not it was the greatest UFC (maybe MMA) bout of all time.

After a solid 14th season of TUF that saw more focus on the fights than the house antics, even UFC President Dana White admitted he felt that it was the best season of fights in TUF's young history. The Finale only supported this decree.

Even though this event was the last UFC main card to be aired by Spike TV (Due to the new deal with Fox), it was the event firsts that seemed to add the increased event excitement.

It was the first season that featured the new weight classes of Bantamweight (135 pounds), and Featherweight (145 pounds). Much like the season itself, these two weight classes going at it all night guaranteed action, technique, and sound fundamentals.

Also, for the first time ever, three $25,000 bonuses that were voted on by fans were awarded to the fighters for best knockout of the season, submission, and fight of the season. These were won by John Dodson (Knockout), Dennis Bermudez (Submission), and Dustin Pague and Louis Gaudinot (Best Fight). These were announced during the telecast of the fight.

Another first had both of the prevailing fighters and 6 Figure Contract winners, John Dodson and Diego Brandao hailing from the same fight camp, Jackson-Winkeljohn Mixed Martial Arts. On the show, Dodson was on Team Miller and Brandao was on Team Bisping.

Each of these winning fighters won their matches decisively, avoiding the dreaded "hands of the judges" (see the two judges that scored the Ferguson/Edwards fight 30-27). Dodson TKO'd Team Bisping's T.J. Dillashaw in the first round. Brandao submitted Team Miller's Dennis Bermudez with a vicious armbar in the first round.

It was a huge kick start to Brandao and Dodson's UFC career from a financial standpoint. In addition to getting a 6 Figure Contract, Brandao got a $40k bonus for his Fight of the Night with Bermudez, and also got a $40k bonus for Knockout of the Night for that same fight. Dodson received a $40k bonus for Submission of the Night. All of that and the $16k (including win bonus) purse they recieved on the night has theses young fighters somewhere between WOW! and KA-CHING!

Dodson - $25k + $40k + $16k + 6 Figure Contract

The two coaches fought as the headliner, and went 3 of 5 rounds with Bisping getting a TKO in the 3rd round. The enormity of the moment seemed to swallow Miller alive, but Bisping seemed to leave exhausted and respectful of what Mayhem had for him.

With every event, there seems to be terms or a term that get overused. This event was no different with "Adrenaline Dump" and "El Cucuy" being in a heavier rotation than the latest Justin Bieber tune, whoever that is.

No Jones for Another 6 Months

The UFC 135 suspension list has been reported, and among the list of routine precautionary wait times, the defending light-heavyweight champion Jon "Bones" Jones has been hit with a 180-day suspension (or 45 day with physician clearance).

At first this seemed a bit sketchy to me; the much more physically punished (and loser of the fight) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson was only hit with a 60-day suspension for his injuries. I immediately let my mind wander to conspiracy theories filled with delusions of match-fixing, car chases, and the subtle manipulation of government agencies. Was this merely another delay tactic to keep Jones from fighting his new nemesis, Rashad Evans?

After snapping out of my self-induced psychological meandering, I decided to employ a bit more logical thought. During the fight, Jones made heavy use of his strangely twiggy bird legs to whittle away at Jackson with mixed results. With many of the kicks being checked by Jackson, it is small wonder why Jones was seen to be slightly limping to a from the apres-fight press conference. It is not a stretch to think that Jones might have done substantial harm to himself with poorly timed kicks.

Of course, he could have also received this suspension pending a six month psych evaluation due to his "interesting" opening techniques.

A Fox Tail

Oh not that one. Rumors of NBC, ABC and HBO have been bouncing around the world wide web and prognosticators for the last few years, it is Fox broadcasting that has landed the UFC. According to the Sports Business Journal Daily Fox has won the bidding said to be 90 million a year for seven or eight years.

This deal puts to rest the potential of UFC buying G4 and rebranding it to a strictly MMA channel. According to the Sports Business Journal Daily FX will air the shows now currently on Versus and Spike TV.

The Thing About Dennis Hallman's Shorts

Arguably the most memorable thing about last Saturday's UFC 133 didn't have anything to do with the well planned event, lighting, graphics, music, matchups, TKO's, failed comebacks, or ring rust.

It came down to a little (too little) pair of blue speedo shorts worn by fighter Dennis Hallman. My living room burst out into verbal confusion, derision, and disbelief. The fact that the sponsor Training Mask was emblazoned in print on the very small front panel really just added to the sublime nature of the shock.

These euro panties would usually be found on some French beach somewhere, not in the Octagon on my pay per view dime. Everyone became a quick fan of Brian "The Hairrow" Ebersole at my gathering, rooting for him to take away this assault on our eyeballs.

Ebersole did come to our rescue, and come to find out, earned $70k extra for doing so. He won the Knockout of the Night bonus for his first round technical knockout of Hallman and as UFC President Dana White said "getting those horrifying shorts off TV as soon as possible."

Hallman later explained his wardrobe malfunction was payment for a bet he lost to a couple of fellow fighters. Thankfully, something good came out of this horrifying event. Dana White said it will never happen again.

Inspirational Light Heavyweight Matt Hamill Retires

UFC light heavyweight fighter Matt Hamill announced his retirement via various online outlets today. Hamill, a decorated collegiate wrestler and TUF veteran, recently had a movie made about his inspiring life story of the challenges of becoming a top tier athlete while dealing with being deaf.

Hamill had experienced a string of losses, the most recent one last Saturday at UFC 133. He was TKO'd by fellow Light Heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson.

Hamill told his fans on Facebook "Wow, tons of comment. It was the best for me to step it down. After Tito fight, my body is burned up. I had problem with ac joint that I cannot strike and no takedown. That's whi I didn't do well against Rampage and Alex. It was a hell of a journey. Thank you so much for your support."

Swick Out With Knee Injury

Mike Swick confirmed via Facebook that he popped his knee out and possibly tore his meniscus, ACL, and MCL:

"Yes rumors are true. I popped my knee today wrestling. Will get MRI results in am but Dr thinks torn MCL, ACL and possibly meniscus. Got my health and size back and was having best fight camp of my career then one small twist during training. Can't catch a break sometimes. Gonna stay positive, heal up and get back quick. :)"

Fighters Assemble!!

With the recent rumors of a Luke Cage movie starring Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and all of the comic book movie activity lately, I think it's time we did the unthinkable here at Smashmouth MMA. That's right. I think it's time to merge MMA, and comic books and see what we come up with. Before you hit me with a "NERD ALERT! NERD ALERT!" let's think about it; are Superheros, and MMA fighters really that different? Other than Gamma radiation poisoning, or being a Norse God, what's the difference?

To truly get my point across I think it's time we look at some of the most Iconic figures in the Marvel Universe. Not only are we going to look at them, but also I think it would be fun to parallel similarities between the Earth's Mightiest Heroes; The Avengers, with some of the biggest names in mixed martial arts.

For the sake of time, we'll stick mostly to the upcoming movie version of The Avengers.

The Incredible Hulk/Brock Lesnar- I'm sure most Americans know the story of the Hulk. Dr. Bruce Banner is poisoned with GAMMA radiation, therefore every time he gets mad...well...you don't want to see that. Upon thinking about this character the first comparison I could think of, of course was Brock Lesnar. Basing his size on the Green Monster, it seemed too easy to compare Lesnar. So I began thinking of other attributes of The Hulk.

-Power

-Athleticism

-Focused Rage

-Has a Phallic tattoo on his chest.....sorry I got confused. Scratch that.

But these weren't enough. I just described half of the heavyweight division in all of mixed martial arts. What else about Brock seemed so Hulk-like? What are some similar characteristics between these two men? That's when it hit me.

-Raw Emotion

Anybody that can't think of a time when they saw Brock Lesnar emotional, needs to be reminded of a little event known as UFC 100. This was enough for me. Playing through the mental movie in my head of Brock stomping around the Octagon, flipping off fans, threatening security guards, it all seemed so monstrous, almost as if Brock couldn't help it.

Since that fight Brock has gone on to show perseverance in and out of the Octagon. He seems to have a handle over the Hulk, but even Dr. Bruce Banner had a hard time containing the beast.

Let's just hope Brock get's back to his winning ways, and in that shows more self control in victory. But who knows, maybe in the future we could see UFC 150: Planet Brock.

Iron Man/Forrest Griffin - I can almost see some of your faces as you read this. Probably having a tough time hanging in for this one. But again, I encourage you to hang with me. Good talk, Russ.

So we all know the role of Iron Man BELONGS to Robert Downey Jr. It was almost scary to see RDJ and Tony Stark's soul merge into one for Iron Man 1 & 2. For those of you who have never seen the movies and know not of what I speak, here is a little review about the origins of Iron Man. Iron Man is the alter ego of a man named Tony Stark. The head of Stark Industries, a weapons manufacturer who likes booze, women, and is brilliant.

The movie version shows Iron Man being born from Tony Stark being captured by a group of terrorists. Tony is so smart he makes an Iron Man Prototype, escapes from the terrorists, and returns to safety. When he goes back to the states he changes his stance on weapons (since the weapons he made were used against him) and becomes the hero we all know and love. Nonetheless, the sarcastic and courageous Tony Stark seems to remind me of a fighter who shares some of the same qualities: Forrest Griffin.

Now I'm not so sure Forrest shares the same vices as Tony, but I do recall some of the same swagger. Remember when we first saw Forrest Griffin? It was on the hit first season of the TV show The Ultimate Fighter. From there he went on to beat Stephan Bonnar to become a UFC fighter, a major PPV draw, and also the Light Heavyweight Champ. During those first few fights we came to expect a self deprecating post fight breakdown, and sarcastic quips about his opponent, or Joe Rogan. But after time something changed with Forrest. He started evolving into a legit 205 lb. fighter.

But just like the previous fighter we discussed (Brock), this wasn't enough. What else could Forrest, and Iron Man have in common with one another? When I think of the name Iron Man it strikes the image of a man wearing a suit composed of metal, protecting him from outside forces. But it's not the suit that Tony Stark relies on as his most vital asset. Its his willingness to step in and fight.

While Forrest isn't the best at one particular thing, he does come to fight every time. He's always game, no matter who he is up against. Even in fights where he got destroyed (Anderson Silva comes to mind, or hey what about that Jardine upset?) he always comes to fight. It's Forrest's willingness to get hit, and keep going, that truly allows him to use all of his weapons.

Captain America/Brian Stann- If this post was done even a year ago, this would go to none other than Mr. Captain America himself, Randy Couture. But this is a new era. For now, Randy is retired, and that allows for new blood to come in, and represent not only MMA, but the U.S. as well. Now as for Captain America, he is the alter ego for a man named Steve Rogers. Rogers wanted to join the military during WWII, but failed physical requirements. It wasn't until he was given the super soldier serum, that he was the Avenger we know today.

Stann came into the UFC from the WEC merger, and has been rolling as of late. It took Stann awhile to find his ranks in the UFC, dropping losses to Phil "Mr. Wonderful" Davis, and Krzysztof Soszynski. But it was as if he had his own super soldier serum (No steroids jokes please) as he has defeated two highly touted fighers in Chris Leben, and Jorge Santiago.

Stann is outspoken for the United States military, and even rose to the ranks of Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps before leaving active duty in 2008. Stann has a fight coming up against a very outspoken, and motivated Chael Sonnen.

Every fight Brian Stann has he continues to prove why he is not only an asset to the fight game, but a leader in patriotism.

Thor/Chael Sonnen- Here is one of my favorites. And Thor is cool too. Now sure Chael Sonnen has neither the size or strength to be mistaken as a norse god. Nor will he ever heave Mjolnir (The hammer that Thor throws) at one of his opponents sending him through the octagon door. The one thing that Chael does have that is mightier than Mjolnir? His words.

Sure everybody knows Chael Sonnen talks....a lot. But what is still a mystery is the effect it has on his opponents. The only real high profile fight we've seen Sonnen in, was against Anderson Silva and Chael looked pretty good to me. Fighters who can talk a big game are good for the sport. With Sonnen, that is an understatement. Not only does he promote the fight, but he also goes after his opponents, his opponents fight team, and if we're lucky....the opponents home country. All the while providing gems of entertainment for us Americans (Let's face it, I don't think anybody else on the globe would enjoy Chael as much as we do...probably because he's already insulted it, but still).

I don't agree with everything Chael Sonnen does. Some of it makes him look down right hypocritical and insane. But the other 99% is awesome. It's almost as if there are two fights going on, a war on the canvas, and a war with words. Most of his opponents only bring one aspect of these two fights, and its not the latter. Nobody else in the game promotes a fight like Chael, and even though he might not be as bulky, or powerful as the god of thunder, that is something of godly proportions! Now I have put this one to bed, let's all go into the Odin sleep.

Nick Fury/Dana White- Every group needs a leader. For the Avengers it's Nick Fury, played by an actor known for his...um...how should i put this? His potty mouth. Now do you see the similarity? Dana is given credit for assembling the best cards in MMA (...Get it?). But would Dana have gotten where he is today without his usage of the 4 letter bombs? Probably. Will he ever stop using them? Never. But that's why it works. Now all he needs is an eye patch, and a S.H.I.E.L.D. badge to make him look the part.

UFC 135: Jones Vs. Rampage Press Conference

The UFC held a press conference today in Denver, Colorado to announce they were bringing Jon Jones and Rampage Jackson. As you might have guessed this was a chance to promote the fight, and also to showcase Quinton Jackson's acting abilities. Sonnen And Leben Want To Fight Rashad

Tito And Dana Feud Back On?

No, I'm not referring to the boxing match up that Tito agreed to, Dana trained and got cleared to fight before Tito backed out.

I'm surmising that with Dana giving Tito a giant leap forward opportunity to fight Rashad Evans at UFC 133, and then Tito turned it down, that the feud's on again.

This storied and heated rivalry stops and starts more than that street hockey game in Wayne's World.

I would love to be a fly on that phone when these two were discussing Tito's snub.

Better yet, isn't it time that "The Adventures of Dana and Tito" reality series is produced? That would be awesome.

Can't you hear Tito? "Dana, I don't want to get up yet, it's too early!"

Dana: "Tito, you left the milk out again and now it's rotten!"

Rashad Evans Can't Get No Fight

First, there was the storied (not steroid) match up of Rashad Evans and the newly crowned light heavyweight champ, Jon Jones. When I say newly, I mean in the octagon directly after Jones beat Shogun Rua at UFC 128.

This was going to be a match up between Jackson MMA teammates that were also sparring partners. A true big brother versus little brother bout. Smack flowed freely and often through every media outlet available. The twitter feud was legendary. GSP even had to step between the two in a club in Vegas during the last fighter summit.

The fight was set for August at UFC 133. Can't wait for that already, right?

Then suddenly, the fight was scrapped due to a hand injury that would require surgery to Jon Jone's hand. Then the UFC scheduled up and comer Phil Davis to square off against the ex-champ Evans.

Then Jon Jone's hand didn't require surgery, but rather some therapy to get it back into fighting shape. But he still would not be ready until sometime in the fall around UFC 135ish or so.

Earlier this week, Phil Davis injured his knee and is out. That happens, right? The UFC was rumored to be setting up a fight between Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida, who knocked out Evans to take the light heavyweight crown from him.

Then yesterday it was announced that a match up between Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans. Their only fight ended in a draw. Tito just resurrected his career by surprising everyone with a knockout of Ryan Bader. Resurrected here is synonymous with saving.

Dana White said that a win against Evans would put Ortiz in the top 3 contenders circle.

Today it was announced that Ortiz declined the fight because he didn't want to take a fight against a contender on short notice. Oh yeah, and he's also working on a new deal with the UFC.

So who always cleans up after the company party? The Janitor. It sounds like this may be true here. The UFC's Janitor, Vladimir Matyushenko is rumored to be stepping up.

While Matyushenko has looked good in his last two fights, this is an anti-climactic end to this thread of match ups.

PSAC Overturns UFC on Versus Referee's Gaffe

Last Sunday at UFC on Versus 4, there was an illegal knee thrown to a down opponent.

You saw it, the crowd saw it, UFC commentator Joe Rogan saw it, Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission officials saw it. The fighter on the receiving end, Nik Lentz definitely saw and felt it. It broke his face. Literally (eye socket).

The only ones that did not see it was the referee of the match, Chip Snider and now evidently the perpetrator Charles Oliveira and his whole camp.

Snider did not even call a time out after it happened. Lentz went on to groggily battle with a broken head and got submitted shortly afterward. Oliveira seemed stoked to have won the match and seemed confused even after Rogan repeatedly asked him questions about the "illegal knee".

PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Commision) officials quickly addressed the issue and said they would be reviewing the matter. UFC Dana White praised PSAC as being one of the best Commissions he'd seen. Many thought the outcome would be reversed before the end of the night.

Instead, it took until today when PSAC changed the result of the match to a No Contest. According to a report on bjpenndotcom, Oliveira's camp contends that "it was an error made by the referee, that should have stopped the fight, given time for Lentz to recuperate, and taken a point away from Charles. Charles cannot pay for an error made by the referee that they themselves (PSAC) appointed."

True, this knee was thrown in the heat of the battle. But there was no way that Lentz would have recuperated, he had a broken face after all. A one point deduction would have been a myopic punishment as well. The fight outcome should have been ruled a disqualification in my opinion, not just a no contest.

Marquardt Is Done

Suddenly this afternoon, news that Nate Marquardt was not only being dropped from tomorrow's UFC on Versus card, but from the UFC spread like wildfire.

The twitterverse began spinning out of control and then this short video of UFC President Dana White surfaced, confirming the news. He says that Marquardt did not pass his medicals and was not only dropped from the fight, but also the UFC.

And that was it.

This fight was scheduled to be Marquardt's first fight as a welterweight (170 pounds) against up and comer Rick Story.

Story will now face Charlie Brenneman in a fight that is no longer the headliner. That privilege will now go to heavyweight brawlers Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo.

I have to say that I love a freak fest. Well, love is in the air. MMAJunkie is reporting that Ken Shamrock and current IBA heavy weight champion James Toney will scrap in the fall. Oh no, not the scrap heap like an actual prizefight. The rules have yet to be established, though there is speculation it will be one round MMA the next Boxing. I am just saying.

If this kind of thing does not convibce the New York lawmakers they are sadly mistaken about legalizing MMA, what will? At least it will be in one of United States most lovely metropolises El Paso, Texas. Yep you read it right, El Paso. I couldn’t think of a more appropriate place either.

Just incase you where wondering Frank is picking his big bro “Ken will take him down and get him in a submission hold in about a minute. Toney has never trained in MMA he has no intentions of training in MMA and he is just looking for money I think. I’ve seen him train he just goes in and boxes and hits the bag and stuff. “

Earth to Royce

Royce Gracie is a true legend in the sport of MMA. Though he didn’t really ever mix disciplines well, he is with out question an outstanding martial artist. According to Fighters Only Magazine he said that Dana White knows he is worth “seven figures.” I am not sure if he is including a decimal point in that, but since his ego seems to be one of the growing forces in the universe, I am leaning toward not.

Royce also drops another gem in the interview saying if he does fight, he wants to fight Matt Hughes. If you don’t remember that last Matt vs. Royce, you are not alone. I am going to guess the Brazilian Jui-Jitsu master does not either. His excuse for the performance against Hughes is he “overtrained.” It reminds me of an old quote that is always attributed to John Wooden: “It is better to work smart than it is to work hard.” I am not sure if the Wizard of Westwood actually said such a thing, but I know Royce does not participate in this philosophy. If working hard gets you no ability to actually stand and trade with MATT HUGHES then maybe you should shake up the routine. Royce was also dominated on the ground by Hughes. That same ground where BJJ has claimed itself as king.

Royce, 1993 was your first fight in the UFC and your ability to mix disciplines in the sport you once dominated has not improved significantly enough for you to actually be competitive in any way. Is that worth seven figures? Was it too many shots to the head?

Clash of the Titans

The big boys clash this weekend as Strikforce continues its heavyweight tournament set for Saturday in Dallas Texas. The tournament has lost its steam with Fedor being ousted and the second round being postponed. However, it is still pretty exciting for MMA fan to see clash of the best heavyweights outside of the UFC.

The weigh-ins took place today and all of the fighters on the main card made weight. Though only one fight on the main card futures non-heavyweights, K.J. Noons vs Jorge Masvidal a lightweight match. That lightweight match’s winner will take on Gilbert Melendez for the Strikeforce lightweight championship.

With the UFC merger looming all the Strikforce fighters are trying out for their spot in the big show. And as the saying goes desperate times call for desperate measures, so expect the leather to be flying.

UFC 131 was a giant success. The card that had a replaced headliner turned out to be missing nothing when the lights went on. Standing submissions, frightening knockouts, back and fourth brawls between heavyweights and the establishing of two future title fights made it a stand out night and a one to remember.

Sam Stout won Knockout of the Night by putting Yves Edwards to sleep with his eyes wide shut, finally living up to his moniker. Dave Herman and John Olav Einemo won Fight of the Night with their back and forth heavyweight dance. Chris Weidman won Submission of the Night by choking Bongfeldt (no word on if he coughed) with a standing Guillotine.

Dana raved about the fights and the atmosphere in Vancouver during the post fight press conference. He stated that it is successful nights like last night that will make it easier to get the sanctioned in the few places still to ignorant about the sport to accept it. He also stated that the state of the Heavyweight division is as stacked as any division and that it is amazing for the sport. Dana confirmed that Ken Florian will most likely be fighting Jose Aldo for the title at 145 pounds and reaffirmed that Junior Dos Santos will be fighting Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title.

According to MMAJUNKIE.com Dana White announced during a fan Q & A that headlining non title fights will be five round.

"I'm in to that," White said. "I like it. I think there's some fights that aren'ttitle fights that are main events, and it ends up being three (rounds), and it should have been five. I'm a big fan of it, and we're working on that right now.

"We were actually going to start it with Brock Lesnar and Junior Dos Santos, but we had already made the fight, so it's kind of hard to go back to those guys after you've already made the fight and say, 'You know what? This is going to be five (rounds) instead of three.' So we're very close to doing it."

White has often shown to be a proactive President. This move is no different, giving the fans something they have been clamoring for since 2009 when Nevada State Athletic Commission sanctioned 5 round non-title fights.

Brock Lesnar Has Surgery

After the preliminary fights on Spike TV tonight for the UFC 130 telecast, Joe Rogan asked UFC President Dana White for an update on Brock Lesnar.

Dana said, "Brock Lesnar actually had surgery yesterday. They removed uh about uh 12 inches of his colon, repaired it, he feels great, he said he's a little sore but the operation was a huge success and now he just has to recover. So we're hoping he can be back uh by the first of the year."

This was good news to the UFC and fight fans alike since many, including Lesnar, thought that his recurring bout with diverticulitis could possibly end his career.

Lesnar was scheduled to fight his fellow TUF (The Ultimate Fighter reality series) coach, Junior Dos Santos next month in Vancouver at UFC 131. He will be replaced by fellow heavyweight fighter Shane Carwin.

Submission of the Week #6- The Spank Down

This weeks highlighted submission isn't taught in a jiu-jitsu school, by a karate sensei, or wrestling guru. As a special treat, I bring you "The Spank Down" submission, as demonstrated by Randy "The Natural" Couture against a cowering Tito Ortiz in UFC 44. Whereas this technique might not hurt in the physical sense of the word, you can be darn sure that his pride will sting for all of eternity (or at least until the youtube clips are no longer accessible.)

Last Thursday I sat with my wife, watching Disc 4 of UFC's 100 Greatest Fights, searching for some inspiration for the upcoming weeks blog when this beauty of a fight came served on a shameful golden platter. After rewinding many times, and my maniacal laughter subsided, I searched for the reasoning behind Ortiz's turtling tactics, the precursor to being spanked like a catholic schoolkid.

From the Tale of the Tape, you could tell that Goldberg had thrown his support behind Ortiz, touting him as a clear favorite to win this bout, after having defended his title five times against the likes of Wanderlei Silva, Evan Tanner, and Ken Shamrock along the way. He went on to say that Ortiz has never been taken down, and there was not much hope for the then 40-year old Couture to break that streak.

Oh Goldberg, if I had a dollar for every time you put your foot in your mouth, I would have exactly $413,210; as my wife puts it- "There really NEEDS to be an option to turn off just his commentary, or the ability to punch him in the throat through the TV screen."

On to the fight, we see that not only does Couture take down Ortiz in EVERY round, but completely dominates him in all aspects of the match. By round 5, a weary Tito that has not adapted to Couture's clearly superior gameplan, makes a last ditch effort to lock up Couture's leg, which just ends up looking like a retarded turtle that has been flipped over. And when Couture realizes that Tito is going to cling onto this clearly feeble submission attempt, he invokes the age-old reprimand of an era now gone; the spanking.

Now I remember being spanked as a kid; not often, mind you, but I do remember learning a lesson. The pain lies in the psychological punishment, not in the physical pain. I am just glad that someone finally shut up that foolbucket Ortiz, and gave him an old-fashioned spank-down.

I'm pretty biased when it comes to fights. I have a select few that I root for, no matter who they are fighting. One of these fighters is Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. But recently it seems the former Light Heavyweight Champion is a little less "Rampage," and a little more "Bea." No I don't mean "B.A. Baracus," I mean former Golden Girl; the late Bea Arthur.

It seems like lately Quinton Jackson seems to have developed a rather bitter, angry disposition, rather than his once goof ball, likeable persona. The statements coming out of today's UFC 130 press conference were that of an angry elderly gentleman, who's being made to "go for a walk" when he doesn't want to, rather than a 32 year old with one more solid title run left in him. Quinton said today:

"I'm not excited about anyone I fight. I don't get excited about anyone, it's my job, my career."

Well then I guess we won't get excited about forking over the 50 dollars to watch you fight. It's disappointing to me that somebody so exciting in and out of the cage has to turn into such a buzz kill. We all know that Jackson has been bit by the acting bug, and once "retired" from fighting, when he chose to do the A-Team movie instead of fighting Rashad Evans. This decision created a rift between him and the UFC. But that was close to two years ago.

I'm not saying he shouldn't pursue a new dream of acting, and to his credit he's the most qualified to cross over. But he needs to make a decision. If you don't want to fight, don't fight. But certainly don't whine about how much you hate to fight, or I'll start to whine when I see you're the main event. It certainly doesn't make sense to state how bad you hate to do what people are going to pay big bucks to watch. Where is the UFC marketing machine? This fight already has doomed written all over it thanks to the injury monster that sunk his teeth into Frankie Edgar, and Gray Maynard. It certainly doesn't need a lackluster main event before any punches have been thrown.

So in short go back to being the "Rampage" we all know and love, or be Quinton Jackson: Actor. I know I would like to see the rest of your career go out on a dominant note. Besides, that Golden Girls reboot will always be there after you retire.

UFC 140: St. Pierre Vs. Diaz?

Cagepotato.com is reporting that Tom Wright, the UFC's director of Canadian Operations, says that UFC 140 will take place in Montreal, Canada on December 10th 2011. Wright goes on to say:

"Well I've heard about the Nick Diaz-GSP fight, but it's too early to tell."

Although the thought of GSP getting an opponent that will theoretically test him is exciting, it's too early to tell. I have a couple of questions about the timing, and logistics of this inevitable match up:

1. Why would a fight of this magnitude take place presumably before the New Year's show?

It doesn't make sense to me that they would have such a highly anticipated fight, be on a card that would not infinitely add to the hype, as a New Year's show would.

2. Why have this fight in Montreal?

We get it GSP is Canadian, and has a huge following there. But wouldn't it make more sense to have this fight take place somewhere in the States? The U.S. seems to be the place where GSP's legacy is being questioned (although there are still multitudes of rabid GSP fans spread all over this country that would swear he is the greatest fight ever. My Mom being one). But I for one would like to see a geographical even playing field for Diaz.

3. Is ZUFFA ready to go against their merger timeline?

While this fight would surely be huge, would it start the Strikeforce/UFC merger more prematurely than what the UFC had previously lied....I mean stated? I know the fans would like to see this merger take place faster, and see some of the best in Strikeforce fight the best of the UFC (See my previous post on the top ten potential SF/UFC match ups on May 9th 2011). I'm just not so sure Dana White is.

We'll have to tune in to the MMA world, and of course Smashmouthmma.com, to see how UFC 140 unfolds. In the meantime let's speculate, and arm chair match make shall we?

Submission of the Week #5- The Ankle Lock

I will spare you the terrible joke this week and get right in to it. The submission we are focusing on this week is the Ankle Lock. This technique presents itself most commonly in two variations; the Achilles Lock and the Toe Hold. Both make use of the very flexible ankle joint to force your opponent to shamelessly tap or suffer some major pain for foreseeable future. The major drawback, and perhaps the reason we don't see much of this move in the octagon, lies with the bulkiness of a fighters gloves; they make it much more cumbersome to twist and manipulate the ankle in such a way to create enough pain to make a grown man cry. But it can be done. After all... man's game.

This move originated in the jiu-jitsu school of martial arts, and permeated to Judo and Wrestling as time progressed. Not too long ago, Judo outright banned this particular joint-lock, due to its potential for permanent injury to those on the receiving end. The Jits did not follow suit per se, but it was though to be crude and crass to finish an opponent with any variation of this technique.

Fast forward 50 years, they're back. Many people believe their resurgence can be attributed to Royler Gracie and his exploits in the Abu Dhabi Combat Championships, but I believe that due to orthopedic advances, we are able to rehabilitate and minimize permanent damage formerly associated with the ankle lock.

Though not as prominent as other submissions within the spectacular finishes in the UFC, there are some notable fights that can be drawn from to illustrate their effectiveness in combat. Click HERE for a great rundown of the top 15 matches that featured the Leg/Ankle Locks.

Thanks for the info, but "How Do I Do It?"

Here are the basics to getting your opponent begging for mercy.

This week, I thought we would give WikiHow a chance to teach us the Ankle Lock.

Make sure your opponent is in a dizzy state. Then hit him behind the legs so he falls down. (In order to get your opponent in a dizzy state you would pull the rope over their eyes and let go quickly or punch them in the face.)
Go for his ankle, grab it and hold it tight.
Start to twist it to the side. (ankle lock) Do not let go until he decides to give in and tap out. If he tries to escape fall on the floor and wrap your legs round his leg which ankle you're twisting. (Grapevine ankle lock/ Angle Lock)
Wait until he taps before you let him go
WARNINGS- Do not twist their ankle to much or it will snap. Make sure he doesn't kick you.

Sufficed to say, I don't think we will call upon WikiHow to teach us anything at all in the future.

Randy Couture Bringing 24/7 Fight Channel......To New York?

Limited information on ZUFFA's (UFC/Strikeforce Parent) new Twitter bonus program has come out.

Seems that fighters are eligible each quarter to earn $5k in each of three categories. The benchmarks are reported to be Most New Followers, Biggest Percentage Of New Followers, and Most Creative. It's kind of like a beauty pageant.........or not.

It's so appropo that it was via Twitter that I first learned of the Fighter Summit Twitter developments:

Blue Steel nailed it when he told me that this new Twitter policy is Guerilla Marketing on steroids. It's so true. Can you imagine hundreds of fighters tweeting? Forget about the ones that will quote Zig Ziglar like motivational quotes like "Pain is just weakness leaving the body".

As MMA grows and it gets impossible to have in person access, Twitter will allow you to know every detail of your favorite fighters, 140 characters at a time.

That's the good side. The bad side is that Twitter is a loaded gun not to be mindlessly played with. Many NFL, NBA, and MLB players have felt the scorpion like sting of backlash created by a tweet that was not properly thought out or filtered.

A player saying he's going to smash someone in the face is a career shortener though. That same tweet from a fighter is probably good fight promotion.

Things Not Business As Usual At Strikeforce

Seems like the mantra that Strikeforce would continue to be run independently was short lived.

Cagepotato.com got their hands on last week's fighter summit agenda which shows:

9:00 am - 9:25 am Opening Remarks - Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertita, President Dana White, Strikeforce Executive Vice President and General Manager Scott Coker

If the move would have been to UFC EVP and GM, then it would have made sense. The fact that it is still under the Strikeforce brand makes it a straight up demotion.

This raises questions like, will Dana take over at Strikeforce? He did seem to take over WEC before they merged brands. Could former WEC executive Reed Harris take over? I doubt it.

It will be interesting to see what the next developments will be.

GSP Gets Between Jon Jones And Rashad Evans In Vegas Nightclub

The Las Vegas Review Journal's Norm Clarke (@Norm_Clarke) reported that there was an altercation this week at Surrender Nightclub at Encore. There were a reported 400 fighters in Vegas this past week for a fighter summit.

"Vegas Confidential learned the incident took place near the table of UFC champ George St. Pierre at Surrender nightclub at Encore. Jones and former champ Tito Ortiz had a table next to St. Pierre's.

St. Pierre ordered Jones and Evans, former friends who trained together, to take it elsewhere before things got ugly.

Jones and Evans, who have been having words of late, walked away to hash out their differences."

This is not the first nightclub altercation with a rival fighter for Evans, who according to fellow fighter Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, received a slap from Jackson in a nightclub, even though Evans claims it was the other way around. From fiveknuckles.com:

"Evans later made it known that Jackson approached him in a night club and slapped him. Jackson vehemently denies this.

"That's a lie," Jackson said. "I didn't walk up to Rashad at all. I don't never walk up to Rashad. I was in the club, enjoying my own self and he walked up to me. So I slapped him. I don't walk up to Rashad."

It is not known if the topic of "Swagger Jacking" came up at all.

If it Talks like a Duck....

Jon "Bones" Jones is on the mend after being told his chronic hand injury will not need surgery. Mr. Jones is a budding superstar and has been crowned by everyone as the next big thing. The reasons for this hype are obvious even to the most casual of observers: tall, handsome, dynamic fighter, humble and well spoken. He is a gift to Dana White and the UFC, whose two top fighters are schizophrenic (Anderson Silva), and boring (GSP). Jones seems destined to be the man to put a stop to the revolving door atop the light heavyweight division, which has produced the most superstars.

However, we have witnessed the first chink in his armor. After agreeing to fight teammate (apparently the most heinous of all acts for a PROFESSIONAL PRIZE FIGHTER) Rashad Evans, Jones drops out of the fight due to the need for surgery on his injured hand. According to Brent Brookhouse of Bloodyellow.com, Jones knew about the fact that he didn't have to have the surgery but waited to release this information until well after Evans had been booked to fight Phil Davis. I do not know the reasons for any of these choices or the process Jones and Maliki Kawa of First Round Management went through to make them. They will however, give us the first look at how Jones handles his first legitimate controversy.

I am a simple man and would never claim to understand the complexity of handling a prize fighter on even the smallest level. No doubt I would be at a total loss on how too handle a legitimate prospective Super Star. But as MMA Daddy always says "you don't need to know how something works to know that it is broke".

Mr. Jones is a fascinating figure and seems to be the whole package. Lets hope he has the people around him to keep that package wrapped.

2011 Fighter Summit

Seems that a semi-covert fighter summit was planned in Vegas for over 200 fighters under the UFC and Strikeforce brands. From the Tweets that have been coming out of it, it appears that it's being held at Red Rock (A Fertitta hotel) and the topics range from using social media, the new insurance Zuffa is offering, to dealing with tax issues.

BJPENN.com posted a very interesting Youtube video of ESPN 1100 interviewing Urijah Faber. I'll let you go check out the post, but an interesting story was brought to the surface. The interview was mainly focused on the upcoming fight with Manny Pacquiao. The conversation quickly turned into how Urijah trains with boxers, and then moved on to if Urijah believes Nick Diaz will box, or come to terms with the UFC, and Dana White on a fight with GSP.

Faber states, "Hopefully Dana will step up. They've had kind of a weird relationship, over the years because you know Dana's a business man and Nick Diaz is good for business when he fights. But he is known for skipping out on some of the PR stuff and being a difficult guy to deal with when it comes to promoting some things, sometimes. I remember Diaz telling me years ago about how they (UFC) punished him for not going on that dating show they were having a couple of fighters go on. You know they would go on this dating show, and Nick had a girlfriend at the time, and they wanted him to go on there, and he wouldn't do it so they put him and I think maybe Karo on the under card."

So I guess by Nick Diaz not being a "company man," means he won't get fresh with some stranger, while Roger Lodge cracks on how awkward it is. I'm sure this isn't the only reason why Diaz was on the under card or let go, but it's certainly tragic if this was at all a factor. It certainly cheated a lot of the fans out of some epic fights. With that I will leave you with a video that showcases a fighter who loves all the attention he can get: Tim Sylvia.

I kind of imagine a meeting between UFC suits, and "The Main-iac" about him appearing on a dating show, went like this.

Submission of the Week #4- The Armbar

So... Two legs walk into a bar, looking to get smash(mouth)ed. The bartender looks up from the dirty glass he is wiping and gruffly yells "Hey... we don't serve your kind here."

One of the legs became offended, until he looks around at the other patrons in the bar. He then grabs his fellow leg and heads for the door.

Before walking out, the leg dejectedly mumbles "C'mon Joe... this is clearly an Arm Bar."

Alright, first off, I never said humor was my strong suit. Secondly, I would like to point out that Joe is an awesome name for a leg. But let us dive in to what we are here for today. The submission of the week comes in the form of a vicious joint-lock, known fairly uninspiringly as the Arm Bar. The most common variation of this submission, the juji-gatame, is used to end fights so often (the figure hovers around 8% of all fights) that it has become virtually synonymous with the Arm Bar. I would, however, like it to be known that I much prefer the Flying Arm Bar; a technique that is said to have been pioneered and exhibited by an 11th grade Spencer Hula to finish off opponents and earn a championship wrestling title. This could be completely false. I don't really check my facts. But if you would like to see this move in action, check out this link

The Arm Bar technique can be initiated in a variety of ways, seems most effective on opponents that prefer striking (their arms become tired, offering less resistance to the pressure applied to the joint), and requires a high degree of flexibility and strength to pull off effectively. Which also happens to be the best defense against this technique.

Here are the basics to getting your opponent begging for mercy.

Grab the opponents wrist or hand. This can be tricky based on the degree of sweat that is pouring off the skin. Keep at and remember "Control the wrist!"- GSP
Swing your legs over the arm, so that the arm is controlled between both legs.
Bring the arm close to the chest, and use that as a fulcrum (first consult a dictionary if you don't know that word) while raising your hips up, thus creating a hyper-extension in the opponents elbow joint.
Pull.
Profit.

Instead of listing my favorite fights in which an Arm Bar submission was used to great effect, I will instead show you pictures to where arm bars figure predominately. Enjoy.

Frankie's Back, Back Again...

No, that is not a contractive mistake in the title. It was announced not so long ago that both Maynard and Edgar have been pulled off the UFC 130 fight card (despite what the iPhone app still says... get on that tech guys) due to injuries. Recent news released on the UFC.com website tell us that though a few of Frankie's ribs keep popping out of place, the real culprit lies with a back injury he sustained around 11 years ago.

Maynard reports that a knee injury of his will make him a less-than-fit fighter for this 3rd meeting of these two lightweights. After the draw at their last meeting in UFC 125, many fans have been eager to see this thing through. Unfortunately, it looks as though they will have to wait even longer now.

Dana White reports that they should only be out six-to-eight weeks, but I have to wonder at the timing of such injuries. Perhaps it is the covert conspiracy theorist in me, but I wouldn't put it past the brass in charge to hold this fight to a somewhat weaker upcoming UFC cards of 133 or 135. But then I realize that how weak the current card for 130 seems without Edgar v. Maynard, especially on a Memorial Day weekend fight, and I know that surely can't be the case. I just don't see Quinton bringing in the same numbers, and think that the PayPerView numbers for this upcoming fight are going to surely suffer.

Hi! My name is MajestyEarl. I am a new contributor....whats that? I've already written for this blog before? Oh now I remember, way back then. It's nice to be with you again, this time with a steady flow of takes on everything MMA. So with that brief re-introduction I will bring you the first golden post back!

Strikeforce is now owned by Zuffa. I know crazy, and unexpected right?

Even though time has passed on this announcement it has left one unhatchable egg of a question in my mind. What fights do I want to see? Like you, I was shocked by the news that Strikeforce had been sold to Zuffa. After it sunk in I started to think of the numerous (although limited) matches I wanted to see. While Strikeforce doesn't boast as strong a roster as the UFC, it does offer some very solid up and comers, and threatening champions. So here is my list of the top 10 fights I want to see from this acquisition.

10. Brock Lesnar Vs. Josh Barnett - This is a good fight for both fighters. Josh Barnett is relatively unknown among the U.S. fans, and Brock is well....Brock. I think if Josh wins he makes a name for himself, and starts making the kind of money a fighter with his experience, and skill set deserves. If Brock wins he beats a seasoned veteran that many believe to be one of the greatest of all time, adding some legitimacy to his abbreviated career.

My Pick: Josh Barnett Def. Brock Lesnar by Submission in the 2nd round.

9. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson Vs. "King" Mo Lawal- This rivalry goes back a couple years, when Mo didn't take too kindly to Rampage's "Stanky Breath" or "Your Mama So..." jokes. On top of that you have two guys who talk, and back it up when the cage is closed.

My Pick: Rampage Def. "King" Mo by TKO in the 2nd round.

8. Vitor Belfort Vs. Gegard Mousasi- This fight was supposed to take place at Affliction: Trilogy back in 2009 (Thanks Josh Barnett). At the time Vitor was having his resurgence, and Gegard was the next big thing. Since then both have cooled a bit, with Vitor losing to Anderson Silva, and Gegard losing the Strikeforce belt to King "Mo" and going to a draw with Keith Jardine. But both are not far off from top contender status, and I think this fight would be a stand up war.

My Pick: Gegard Mousasi Def. Vitor Belfort by KO in the 3rd round.

7. Jon Jones Vs. Dan Henderson- With Jon Jones being the youngest UFC champ ever, I think some tough challenges await him. The one thing that Jones is lacking in his young fight career is a fight with a gritty veteran. Sure he fought Shogun, but I'm not so sure that's who decided to show up. Dan Henderson has a style that is sure to test Jon Jones in a way that Rashad Evans never could. I'm not saying Hendo would win, but I do think that right hand has something for Jones.

My Pick: "Bones" Def. Dan Henderson by Submission in the 4th round.

6. Randy Couture Vs. Herschel Walker- Right? I don't think I even need to explain this one.

My Pick: Randy Couture Def. Hershel Walker by TKO in the 2nd round.

5. Brian Stann Vs. Tim Kennedy - This fight has to happen. Not only are these two men grinders, they also represent much more. As most of you know, Tim Kennedy is currently serving in the United States Army and Brian Stann served in the United States Marine Corps. Make this the Fight For The Troops headliner. Not only would it guarantee emotion, but would also make one great fight.

My Pick: Brian Stann Def. Tim Kennedy by Unanimous Decision in the 3rd round.

4. Nick Diaz Vs. Jason "Mayhem" Miller - Don't be scared homie.

My Pick: Nick Diaz Def. Jason Miller by Split Decision in the 3rd round.

3. Georges St. Pierre Vs. Nick Diaz - This is the only relevant fight left in the Welterweight division in my opinion (until Ben Askren develops of course). Even though St. Pierre is an unstoppable lay, and prayer, I think Diaz would take the fight to St. Pierre. GSP proved in his last fight that he doesn't like getting punched in the face, something Diaz likes to hand out. Even though I still believe St. Pierre would win this fight, I refuse to expect a finish from Captain Canada. I think to truly legitimize this fight the UFC also needs to make this fight happen in California. Perhaps somewhere with a 209 area code.

My pick: Georges St. Pierre Def. Nick Diaz by Unanimous Decision in the 5th round.

2. Alistair Overeem Vs. Cain Velasquez - Even though Overeem has a big test coming up with the pending Strikeforce Heavyweight championship Grand Prix, I think he will come out on top. At that point I think the next step has to be to fight Cain. Even though Cain had to get through a number of the UFC's elite to win the belt, he still has some mega fights to get through before his reign as champ extends past 1 or 2 title defenses, and solidifies his legacy. We all know Cain has an excellent wrestling pedigree, but its Alistair's power that seems to be the catalyst in this fight. Sure he tossed Brett Rogers down, but that's...Brett Rogers. Let's see him step in with THE true contender to his reign.

My Pick: Alistair Overeem Def. Cain Velasquez by KO in the 2nd round.

1. Gilbert Melendez Vs. Frankie Edgar - Since many believe that Gilbert Melendez is the best Lightweight in the world, and Frankie Edgar's legacy hangs in the balance with his next fight against Gray Maynard, there seems to be a question mark surrounding these 2. It's easy to see they both have momentum. Now let's see who has more. Not much more to it than that.

My Pick: Gilbert Melendez Def. Frankie Edgar by Unanimous Decision in the 5th round.

Former NHL'er Latest To Convert To MMA

Mixed Martial Arts has seen WWE pro wrestlers, NFL football players, MLB baseball players, and if you believe Shaquille O'Neal, will eventually see NBA players cross over into mma training and fighting.

The most recent pro athelete wanting to dip their toes into the mma water is former NHL ~~goon~~, er......."enforcer" Donald Brashear. Brashear spent 18 years in the NHL with multiple teams, earning a reputation as a tough intimidator.

Brashear, 39 says he has been training with professionals as he eyes his first fight on the undercard of Ringside 11 on June 4 in Quebec City against a younger Martin Trempe who also has a history as a hockey tough guy.

In addition to training mma, Brashear steps into the cage having had 3 amateur boxing fights, 212 fights on the ice during his pro hockey career, a jacked up and abusive upbringing, and the 15th most penalty minutes in NHL history.

Plus: He won't have to fight this match on ice. Minus: He won't be able to pull a jersey over this guy's head before he starts wailing on him.

Vince McMahon: MMA Not Competition

Actually the direct quote by Vince McMahon was "the company does not view MMA as a direct competitor."

This was part of the response by McMahon to WWE's (Worldwide Wrestling Entertainment) sharp 65% net income loss year over year for the first quarter. It was noted that part of that loss was due to 2010's first quarter including a Wrestlemania event that did not occur until the second quarter of 2011. Still, that's a drop from $24.7 mill to 8.6 mill to you and me.

McMahon's company, which is publicly traded (NYSE: WWE), has seen it's stock drop a little over $2 in the last month April 7 - May 6. It has dropped from $18 a share to just over $10 in the past year.

"Analysts during the (conference) call questioned whether Mixed Martial Arts events are cutting into the fan base, and therefore the revenue stream of, the WWE. McMahon said the company does not view MMA as a direct competitor. He also said WWE has a lot of room to grow and is pursuing new revenue streams."

WWE has expanded into feature films such as 12 Rounds and The Chaperone with their stable of entertainers, to mixed result.

Brass tacks: MMA'S burgeoning popularity is absolutely impacting the popularity of "professional" wrestling. MMA offers smaller, less muscular combatants than the titans offered by WWE (*cough* steroids *cough*).

Cage fighters are larger than life personalities that put it all on the line and without a script.

Would you rather have a block of real Wisconsin aged cheddar or a box of that fake gelatinous Velveeta? Not the best example, but give me a real fight, with real fighters, with real stories anytime.

Recently stumbling across a UFC 129 pre-fight press conference interview with Georges St. Pierre (you can tell it is pre-fight, as both of his cybernetic eyes are still fully functional), I thought it was something I must pass on to your readers.

The first time I was watching it, I just started cracking up; first of all, who actually gave this lady a press-pass? Secondly, what could she possibly hope to accomplish with the creepiest line of questioning I have ever bared witness to?

We all knew what she was alluding to. She was just barely on the restraint side of just coming right out and saying it. But kudos George on the deflection and keep under control. If asked this same question, I would not have the grace to let it go so easily.

Eye Care Not Too Far Away For GSP

UFC Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre won his championship fight against challenger Jake Shields last Saturday at UFC 129. During the match, he was affected by a poke in the eye by a Shields punch.

The following day, GSP tweeted to his fans and followers that he would be ok. He also stated "I am so lucky my BJJ instructor Bruno Fernandes is an opthamologist!!! I'll be in good hands!!!"

Clash Of The MMA Titans

The first reported tag team event of previous MMA promotion rivals M-1 Global and Zuffa, LLC (parent company of UFC and Strikeforce) is reported to be a big one.

The two companies have agreed in principle to a match up between legendary fighters Fedor Emelianenko (31-3-0 w/1 N/C) and Dan Henderson (27-8-0). There are many honors and belts accomplished by these two fighters. Until Fedor lost his last two bouts in a row, many thought he was the best pound for pound fighter in mixed martial arts. Henderson recently became Strikeforce's Light Heavyweight champion at the age of 40.

The matchup is tentatively scheduled for the end of July 2011. It's possible that this matchup will be at catchweight between Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight.

Submission of the Week #3- Kimura

The Kimura, also known as the chicken-wing (delicious) or the ude-garami, was promptly renamed after Masahiko Kimura used it to break Helio Gracie’s arm during a 1955 challenge match in Brazil. Though grainy, you will notice (on the image to the right) that Gracie's arm is at an impossible angle, only reached due to his unwillingness to submit. I guess one of the founders of BJJ found it appalling to be submitted with his own trickery; and paid with bone.

The submission is one that primarily attacks the shoulder joint, but it can be very painful to the elbow joint as well. When performed perfectly, this submission will hyper-rotate the shoulder, causing your opponent to scream for mercy, or causing bones to shatter.

As with many submissions, the Kimura can be initiated from a variety of positions, but because getting leverage is key to this submission, side-guard is often the preferred initiating position, as this can give you the option of stepping over the opponents head to further leverage the shoulder and elbow, whereas in closed guard, you have to rely on sheer power.

Here are the basics to getting your opponent begging for mercy.

(Assuming opponent is in your full guard, because let's face it... they aren't good enough to transition to anything else). Grip the wrist of your opponent and force it to the ground by your hip. If you are right-handed, use your right hand to force his left hand to the ground.
Sit up slightly, wrap your other arm around the opponent's immobilized upper arm and grasp the wrist of your other hand. This traps your opponent against your chest.
Move your legs around the opponent's middle section, pressing firmly into her lower back to prevent her from rolling out of the shoulder lock.
Push his elbow and hand towards the back of his head to complete the shoulder lock.

The first time I recall seeing this move in a Live event was in UFC 111 with that punkrock Dan Hardy going to his happy place not once, but twice, while Georges St. Pierre attempted to submit him through the Kimura. Hardy gained a fan that day; anyone can resist multiple submission attempts from the cyborg is alright with me. I'm sure old Helio Gracie would have been proud.

Evidently, there was a grass roots effort that I was unaware of to see UFC legends Royce Gracie and Ken Shamrock fight at the upcoming UFC event in Rio.

At 1:32 pm pacific today, Ken wrote the following unedited post on his Facebook wall:

"Just want to put my thoughts on whats going on with the Brazil UFC people have been talking about me and royce fighting it will never happen let me tell you why they dont care about what the fans want just that they get there way it is a shame becouse me and Royce and many others made it possible for them to have what they are controling God Bless MMA"

It was reported yesterday that Gracie wants a rematch with Matt Hughes.

As MMA grows in popularity and paydays, it will be increasingly difficult for the legends that created it to feel like they got the recognition and reward that they deserved. Unfortunately, it is a part of the evolutionary process for every successful sport.

Submission of the Week #2- Guillotine

When thinking of the word Guillotine, grim pictures of dandy men wearing lacy cravats losing their heads on accord of a huge metal and wooden contraption are conjured. The word itself is named after Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, a man attributed to the reformation of capital punishment during the French Revolution. And much like the submission presented last week, this aptly named-submission can dish out the punishment with a capital P. (I apologize for the terrible segue....)

Though bastardized and often pronounced GILL-uh-teen (astonishingly even by upcoming UFC 129 headliner Georges St. Pierre, who claims to be French Canadian....), the Gee-uh-teen is a very popular choke that, much like the rear-naked choke can take the form of a blood choke or tracheal compression technique (read: cut off your air supply, fool). And though the variations in body positioning and restraint (standing, mounted or even in the sprawl) can differ, the choke itself derives its name from the arm positioning; much like the modified-stocks surround the neck of a soon-to-be-headless victim, the arms encircle the head. Pressure is then applied by the broad side of the arm across the throat, acting as the swift "blade" of justice. Though, in MMA it usually results in much less blood.

Here are the basics to getting your opponent begging for mercy.

Get a firm base in a standing position or from the guard. Pull your opponent's head down by placing your hand on the back of his neck or by pulling down on his gi so that he faces the ground.
Put your arm around his head into a position that resembles a headlock. Slide your forearm down, under his chin and across his neck, making sure that the blade of your forearm (and not the flat part) is against his neck.
Grasp the wrist of your choking arm with your free hand. Keep the grip on his neck tight and try to keep his head wedged under your arm as deeply as possible.
Place one leg slightly forward. Stand up straight and twist your hips in the direction of your forward leg to execute the choke.

Relevant to the upcoming welterweight title-bout of St. Pierre v. Shields, how is George going to protect himself from Shields oft-utilized arm-in Guillotine choke?

"You have to stay loose; the natural reaction to having your head enclosed by a sweaty bicep pressing against your throat is to freak the frack out. Fight this urge and stay calm... Using your shoulder against your opponents face can give you a bit of leverage against the choke, and if you can disrupt their guard, you should be able to escape."

On the first TUF season I watched a scraggly Cody McKenzie; he was definitely not much to look at and in fact convinced me that he was straight out of the hillbilly woods. He even offered up that his training was rather non-traditional in that he just rolled around with friends to learn the sport. But as he entered the octagon, and held his opponent in a quickly applied guillotine, I was amazed. And when he repeated the same feat in the very next fight, despite the fact that his secret weapon was revealed, I was very impressed.

Also known as Mata leão ("Lion killing" in Portuguese), the rear naked choke, or RNC, has a few accepted variations to its application on your target. While the more widely-used "Figure Four" variation seeks to restrict (and by restrict I mean completely cut off) blood flow to the brain via the carotid arteries, the "Clasping Hands" variation would best be used on those you really hate; it is much more painful and restricts both breathing and blood flow- Can you say 2 for the price of 1? This technique is best reserved for those foes deemed most heinous: child rapists, IRS agents and lawyers.

     The RNC is said to have descended from the sleeper hold first used by Jim Londos on June 29, 1931. Those that witnessed this choke firsthand proclaimed it to be some sort of black magic, though the execution has since been adapted to make it look much less mystical and much more awesome.

      Why should I learn this technique? Barring the mention of how awesome it is (when properly executed), the sheer fact that 1 out of every 6 MMA fights ends in a RNC should give you enough motivation my friend. Though heavier gloves makes locking this into position a bit tougher, it is one of the best submissions for late-round victory, as it bypasses the fact that your opponent has now become the greased deaf guy from Family Guy, making the copious amounts of sweat a non-factor. Just hope you have enough strength in your little girl arms to press hard into that artery.

     Disclaimer: This choke can be dangerous to perform if you lack self-control or a conscience. As it restricts blood flow to the brain, the immediate result is the victim "going to sleep". If not released in short order, this quickly leads to brain damage and death. Just ask Rafiel Torre how easy it can be.

Aside from being the bloodiest fight I have seen, it proves the earlier claim that it doesn't matter how slippery you are (due to sweat or ...your own blood), this technique is here to stay. Due to copyright restrictions, I can't show you the real fight, but below is a very accurate re-enactment of this fight.

Here are the basics to getting your opponent begging for mercy.

During a street fight, always attempt to go behind your opponent and position yourself facing your opponent's back to prepare your RNC.
Using your left hand on your opponent's forehead tilt the head backwards and wrap your right arm around your opponent's neck.
Your inner forearm should touch the left side of their neck. Your bicep should touch the right side of the neck.
Your opponent's chin must be resting on the middle of your bent arm. It should look like an upside down letter V with your elbow pointing straight forward. This is important for the choke hold to be perfect.
Place your left elbow on your opponent's left shoulder. It should form a letter L with your hand pointing up towards the ceiling.
Grab your left bicep with your right hand. Then simply just latch on your right hand to your left bicep making sure you are keeping both of your arms in position.
Constrict the air flow of your opponent's neck by clamping your right arm tighter making the V shape narrower. Press down on their head with your left hand forcing it deeper into your right arm making a perfect rear naked choke.

While the other bloggers on this site have been fans of MMA for quite some time now, I guess you can call me a johnny-come-lately [insert crude joke here]. I do recall at the tender age of eight being enrolled in Tae Kwon Do, having dreams of being the next Last American Ninja, and thus purchasing issues of Black Belt magazine, if only for the ads that hawked all the goods that would facilitate that dream; katanas, sais, even real ninja stars (until they were outlawed in California). If only I could convince my mom to let me turn the garage into my own dojo... and then I started to see the ads that told me that I could become a Judo Master if only I followed the teachings of some Gracie guy. I remember sitting on the edge of my bed, watching bouts of his on KCOP 13 and being amazed. Sign me up... Well it turns out the cost was much more than a young pup could afford on his hard-earned allowance of $5 weekly. By the time I had mowed enough lawns and cleaned enough bathrooms to pay for this training, I would be a full adult of twelve...

And so, after attaining the coveted belt of green under heavyweight 1988 Olympic Tae Kwon Do champion Jimmy Kim, then deciding purple wasn't as cool as green, I fell away from the dreams I once held. A world replaced by computers and girls, video games and song.

It wasn't until my girlfriend (now wife) brought me over to her parent's house to watch UFC 101, that I was formally reintroduced to this world. She was a bit hilarious in her noble attempt to prep me beforehand; a crash-course in terminology so I wouldn't appear a complete dolt. And as I saw Forrest Griffin run away from the octagon and a much more capable Anderson Silva, I remember laughing myself senseless.

Aside from the rest of the lackluster fight card, I knew I had found some common ground with the family I would eventually become a part of. While I still mock the need for ring girls and the drama that lends itself to the years I watched "wrestling", I counted myself a newly-forged fan of Mixed Martial Arts.

With the realization that I would probably be over to the same house, watching UFC 102, I decided (being a person that HATES not being informed on everything under the sun), that I would educate myself on the finer points of the sport. The time spent after that fight was dedicated to scouring message boards and fan sites, assimilating any and all factoids available to me.

I cannot claim the same seemingly eidetic recall that my fellow bloggers have while casually pulling old fight results and stats out of thin air to illustrate their views. That has never been a talent of mine, especially when just now joining the phenomena that has been captivating people for close to 20 years. Much like an old Vietnam vet rambling down the street would say "You weren't there man.... you don't even know..." And it's true, I am rather late to the game. And even eagerly watching the 5-disc volume of the UFC's 100 greatest fights (though I do have the right to argue there were many lame ducks within those ranks), I shall always be a bandwagon fan. But a fan, without a doubt.

Nick Diaz Has A Boxing Jones

Less than a week after knocking out the latest challenger to his Strikeforce welterweight crown, Nick Diaz says he's leaving MMA for the sweet science.

Sort of.

Diaz and his mentor Cesar Gracie do seem bent on exercising the clause in Diaz' last contract allowing him to box. This contract was forged before the recent purchase of Strikeforce by MMA juggernaut Zuffa LLC the parent company of the UFC.

Gracie was quoted in an interview with HDnet's Inside MMA as having a contract waiting to be signed by Fernando Vargas. Later it was disclosed that Vargas was out due to medical reasons and a fight against former IBF champ Jeff Lacey was in negotiations.

Diaz however was much more direct in the same Inside MMA interview: “[Strikeforce] doesn’t have anybody else for me to fight right now, I’m better than all these guys they have. The guys they have ranked above me, I’m sure they don’t want to fight me. I don’t see much of a future in this sport for me. I honestly don’t, especially if there’s not a whole [lot] of money going on.”

Diaz, who was paid $175,000 for knocking out challenger Paul Daley last weekend, seems in part to be lured by boxing for their larger potential paydays.

Gracie reveals some leveraging strategy when he says Diaz’ next fight will “definitely” be in boxing unless he’s offered a shot at UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Say what you will, good or bad, about Nick Diaz but he consistently finds ways to swim against the current.

Now former UFC Heavyweight Gabriel Gonzaga announced this morning via Facebook that he is officially out of the UFC:

"Official now - Out of UFC - Thanks for all your support - back to normal life and BJJ forever"

Gonzaga once was considered a rising star in the heavyweight division, with maybe his high point being when he turned the tables on Mirko Cro Cop and knocked him out with a devastating leg kick.

Gonzaga's announcement coincides with UFC Dana White's revelation that WEC will be rolled into the UFC in 2011.

When Politics Meets MMA

Ok, so the picture is misleading. But it drives home the point.

Many signs point to the fact that mixed martial arts has arrived into the mainstream. Earlier this month three of the major clothing brands catering to mma were sold to Authentic Brands Group out of Canada.

Consolidation occurs when an industry blows up in popularity, creates successful demand for ancillary products and larger corporations see the light and go on buying sprees to get into the game.

The darker side of the success of mma is that it begins to show up in ways that are more WWE, than UFC.

Take the case of dark horse politician Mike Spears (right), Louisiana senate candidate. Most believe he has no shot at beating incumbent David Vitter (left). So he goes on a circuit of shaking hands, kissing babies, and talking about how he'll better things for his constituents, right?

If you're Spears, you challenge your opponent to a "cage match".

It seems that the USAMMA (United States Association of Mixed Martial Arts) marketed this challenge (which took place in a restaurant) on their website, gave Spears a logoed backdrop, and a slot in their upcoming "Return of the Champions" event on October 16 at the cajundrome.

Spears is promoting the fight with fighter smack that runs the gamut of "This is a modern day duel" to making his opponent "feel how the American people feel".

Lesnar v. Carwin Heavyweight Title Match Scrapped

The anticipated heavyweight title matchup at UFC 106 between current UFC Heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar and contender Shane Carwin has been cancelled according to a Yahoo! Sports Exclusive.

Many deemed the heavy fisted Carwin as the first real challenge that Brock Lesnar has had since entering the Octagon.

Brock Lesnar has been sick for over 3 1/2 weeks and said "he’s never been this sick in his life,” according to UFC President Dana White, who also commented “He said it’s been going on for a long time and he just hasn’t been able to shake it.”

White says he doesn't think it was a case of the swine flu, otherwise known as the H1N1 virus.

It is unknown at this writing who will be the headlining bout (possibly the co-main event of Forrest Griffin v. Tito Ortiz?), or if Shane Carwin will go ahead and fight on this card against another opponent.

After last Saturday's dominating performance at UFC 104 by Cain Velasquez, a Carwin/Velasquez matchup would have many MMA fans salivating at the mouth. Odds are though that at about a month away, that would be too soon to see Velasquez hopping back into action.

Stranger things have happened in the world's greatest sport.

"King" Mo to Strikeforce

Sherdog.com is reporting that Mo Lawal is now under contract for Strikeforce, and could fight as early as December.

This is good for both Lawal, and Strikeforce. Good for Lawal in that it will give him exposure to the American fans, and build his reputation so that the UFC will give him a second look. This is good for Strikeforce because it gives them an eccentric character that has a lot of potential, and has name value that isn't the UFC's scraps.

Lawal recently defeated Mark Kerr with a TKO in the first round.

Kimbo Vs. Houston Alexander A Possibility At UFC 107

It's being reported by fiveouncesofpain.com that a Kimbo Slice versus Houston Alexander matchup may occur at UFC 107 in Memphis, Tennessee later this year.

The report states that one of the fighters have been contacted to discuss the possible matchup.

Slice is coming off a stint in the most recent installment of TUF where he lost in his first match against ex-IFLer Roy "Big Country" Nelson.

After a show of power and destruction in his first few fights in the UFC, Houston Alexander has come back down to earth as opponents have exposed his lack of a ground game.

That's what makes this matchup intriguing. Two massively violent stand up fighters with definite knock out power and no ground game. This one could be a brainwave altering brawl.

Hey, don't scoff. This match could have that kind of action.

UFC 107 is scheduled for December 12, 2009 and features the headline championship match between B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez.

Resurgence of the Phenom

Coming off an extended hiatus, we here at Smashmouth have a lot of catching up to do. I think I would like to start with the biggest thing to happen in the last six months. What could this be? Anderson Silva's destruction of Forrest Griffin? No. Chuck on dancing with the stars? Definitely not. Rampage's departure from MMA? No, we all know that won't last.

No, I'm talking about Vitor Belfort's first round knock out of Rich "Ace" Franklin. While this probably isn't the biggest upset in UFC history, it does establish the resurgence of Vitor Belfort (19-8). Not only had it been over four and a half years since The Phenom had fought in the octagon, it also marked 12 years from which Vitor first walked in as a 19 year old freak athlete.

In Vitor's last fight in the UFC he lost a Split Decision to Tito Ortiz in a lackluster performance. Many thought this had marked the end of relevance for Vitor in MMA. This was until Vitor made a Splash in the MMA world again after he destroyed Matt Lindland, and Terry Martin.

After Affliction disbanded the UFC picked up Vitor's contract, and put him right to work. At UFC 103 Vitor looked great, and proved that he is one of the fastest, and strongest fighters in Mixed Martial Arts. Now with the talks that Vitor will fight Anderson "The Spider" Silva in January it poses an odd question. Can speed and strength overcome skill and style?

Time will tell. But I think that Vitor will be the first fighter in the UFC to upset the Spider, and give the middleweight belt a new home.

UFC 107: Penn Vs. Sanchez

It has recently been announced that BJ Penn will fight top contender Diego Sanchez for the UFC Lightweight Division belt. The fight will take place on December 12 at UFC 107, in Memphis Tennesee.

Penn (14-5-1) is coming off a submission victory over Kenny "Kenflo" Florian. Sanchez (23-2) is coming of a split decision victory over Clay Guida, a fight that many consider to be a "Fight of the Year"candidate.

This will be a very interesting fight for BJ Penn who has yet to come across a fighter in the lightweight division that has truly tested him. Many thought that Kenny Florian would be Penn's biggest challenge. That was until BJ submitted Kenny in four rounds.

The difference in the Penn Vs. Sanchez fight will be how Diego's strength matches up against BJ's. Diego is a lightweight in a welterweight's body, and as we saw in BJ's last three fights at Welterweight, he struggles with this size difference.

With that said, I see Diego taking BJ to all five rounds with a Unanimous Decision win for Baby James.

The Empire Strikes Back

Josh Barnett did his best Lando Calrissian by selling the hopes of MMA fans to roids.

That is, fans that actually still care about fighters.

Then Tom Atencio finally admits that Dana White is his daddy after Dana chopped off the hand and let him advertise in the Octagon again.

As a fan, I am saddened because the monopoly of MMA is going to continue without a fight. Dana is going to continue to be a godfather and strong-arm people to do what is going to make him rich.

I have less hope for the future. Though MMA may continue to be a strong niche sport, it is going to be run by a guy that very closely resembles the Boston tuff guys the big talking UFC president fled from so many years ago.

Here is to you Godfather. I guess we will all have to bow and kiss the ring.

Barnett 2 Time Looser

Josh Barnett, a top 5 all time heavyweight is busted for the second time by the California State Athletic Commission for using a banned substance.

The baby face assassin is not the kind of guy you look at and think, "oh wow, that dude roids". He is as much the baby fat assassin, as he is the baby faced assassin known for his endurance as he very much passes the famous banned substances eye test.

I am a bit salted because I think that he was the last person that Fedor Emilianenko needed to beat to clean out all the prominent heavyweights over the last eight years of MMA. I also may be a frustrated cuz it cuts down one of the great months of MMA ever planned.

Congratulations Baby Fat, you have helped take MMA down a peg today and ruined an epic match up between two legends. You have set an organization scrambling for an opponent for their biggest draw, and you put a damper on my August 1st plans.

Couture To Face Nogueira At UFC 102

Legendary heavyweight MMA fighters Randy Couture and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira are set to face each other at UFC 102 according to a press release from the UFC. The event will be the first that the UFC has hosted in Portland Oregon. It is scheduled for August 29.

This represents a homecoming to Couture, who began his career in Oregon.

Both fighters lost their belts in their last fight. Couture lost to Brock Lesnar, and Nogueira lost his interim belt to Frank Mir, setting the stage for a belt unification between Mir and Lesnar at UFC 100 on July 11 in Las Vegas.

Tim Sylvia Moves Up And Spreads Out

It was supposed to be two ex-heavyweight champs representing their respective sports at Adrenaline III in MMA competition.

48 year old Ray Murcer was a boxing heavyweight champ and Tim Sylvia was an MMA heavyweight champ in the UFC.

Sylvia had the heavyweight part covered coming in swelled at a nice 310 pounds. Problem was he did not bring the champ portion with him into the ring or obviously his pre fight preparation, resulting in getting knocked out by Murcer in 9 seconds.

You know the beef: Who would win in a head to head matchup, mmaer or boxer? The boxing side of this match may feel somewhat vindicated, but mma fans know better.

Cro Cop Is One And Done

You gotta love MMA. You can never tell what's going to happen in the cage, or outside.

In this case, The Croatian Sensation Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic went Moe Howard on his opponent Mostapha Al-Turk today at UFC 99, poked him in the eye, beat him into a referee stoppage and then lifted his hands in victory.

Pretty good restart for a Pride favorite that came to the UFC and was unceremoniuosly manhandled and was dismissed until today's second chance at redemption, right?

But check this:

UFC President Dana White broke his own rule for the first time in 9 years and gave Cro Cop a one fight deal. He had agreed to the next 2 fights in principle, but wanted to see how Filipovic fared in this fight. He was rewarded by being told after the fight that Cro Cop was leaving the UFC due to signing a 3 fight deal with DREAM.

To be the best, you have to beat the best. If you don't care about being the best, just chase the money.

It's clear which one Cro Cop opted for.

Dear Anderson,

We know that your opponent Saturday night went to the ground easier than LA Rams QB Jim Everett being phantom tackled. In fact, at times it looked like he was begging for an excuse to quit.

But we desperately want dominance in our UFC Champions. Your act at UFC 97 was reminiscent of the high school bully that was two years older and stronger than the underclass victim he picked out, taunting and embarassing at every available opportunity.

The UFC doesn't have anyone in your weight class to give you a decent challenge, but in the absence of a pedigreed contender would you mind putting your opponent away in a dominant fashion so we don't have to hear people wonder out loud about your heart and whether or not you are simply trying to prevent injury to yourself?

Although you showed you have kicks, if I wanted to see someone do trick kicks (like when you went behind your own leg to kick Thales Leites with your other leg) I can go to youtube and watch people of all ages do that.

We simply want to see the "pound for pound best fighter" as many call you, instead of the Cirque Du Silva routine you've given us during your last two fights.

To make it worse, UFC 97 proved to be ex-champion killer night with the defeat of former Light Heavyweight champs Steve Cantwell (WEC), Brian Stann (WEC), and Chuck Liddell (UFC). We desperately needed you to represent and knock someone out.

We don't spend hundreds of dollars or sixty of dollars to watch you fight in person or via pay per view. Let me make it clear that the boos you heard rising from the crowd on hand in Canada and from homes and clubs at locations around the world, were not booing with you, but booing at you.

As far as Thales Leites, the UFC needs to set this turtle on his back to the pastures offered by other smaller and less relevant promotions than the "Ultimate Fighting Championship". The two fake "my eye was gouged" did not help this sitch.

The Heat is on the Iceman

According to Dana White, who spoke with Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press, Chuck Liddell does not just need to win his next fight, he needs to be impressive.

The finish line may in sight for this era of MMA's first household name. Liddell was once represented by White and the two have both spoken fondly of each other. When push comes to shove Liddell is an employee and as we all know, performing poorly is a nice way to get yourself unemployed.

Liddell seems to be reluctant to change and has become predictable. The same wide stance and wide circling motion while dropping his hands and throwing lazy left hooks are now as synonymous with the Iceman as a head kick to Babalu or a flurry of punches dropping the Huntington Beach Bad Boy is.

I'm a fan, and I would love to see him fight for the next 10 years, however there needs to be an evolution at The Pit. It would also help if Liddell could keep his chin down in the next fight.

Tapout Founder Dies In Accident

Tapout is one of the first clothing brands dedicated to the sport of MMA. Before stories on Sportscenter, before the PPV's every few weeks, there was underground fighting.

During those same days in the past there was a future Presidential candidate calling for MMA to be banned. Those were the days when MMA was the punk rock of sports. Now the sport is more Blink 182 than it is Black Flag.

Charles "Mask" Lewis was there. He was an influence. He supported fighters when there was little money in the sport. He scouted fighters and helped organizations become aware of up and comers.

Then he was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident at 12:57. Though not a lot of details are known at this time, I thought it important to to focus on a pioneer before we get caught up by the details of his passing.

MMA legend Randy Couture has accepted a fight with Nogueria. UFC 101, rumored to be in Couture's old stomping grounds in Portland Oregon, will be the stage for this epic clash.

Though Big Nog’s best days are behind him, and Couture's only fight in the last few years was a KO at the hands of a monster, It will still be fun to watch. Too bad it wasn’t 3 years ago.

Couture Vs. Cro Cop A Possibility

In an interview with Arianny Celeste, Randy Couture disclosed that there is a possibility that he might fight Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 99 scheduled for June 13 in Germany. The odds of the matchup occurring depends on how long a movie takes to wrap that Couture is featured in this spring.

99 Problems But A PPV Ain't One

Say what you will about Dana White and the Ultimate Fighting Championship MMA empire he built, but it stands as one of the few recession resistant enterprises around today.

With the most recent UFC 94 event breaking Las Vegas live attendance and pay per view records, White looks like he will continue growing his brand of MMA promotion while others falter and flail.

UFC 100 is scheduled to be held somewhere around July this year, and may be the pinnacle event of 2009. It's rumored that the UFC is planning to have every weight class to have a title fight, barring any injuries to the participants.

Many aspects of fight fans' lives are being tightened during this economic downturn, but the belt's not yet hitting the UFC notch.

Matt Hughes: "My last two fights against Georges, he felt greasy"

UFC 94 happened this past Saturday, and although it didn't live up to the hype it was still a great night of fights. Georges St. Pierre completely dominated the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds of the much anticipated fight showing that he was the much stronger, and more improved fighter of the two. Towards the 3rd, and 4th round BJ looked completely helpless,and GSP was close to finishing the fight.

The fight was called after the 4th after BJ's corner threw in the towel. That should be the end of that right? Wrong! NSAC is investigating into the allegations that GSP's corner put Vaseline on his body making him greasy, giving him the advantage of being harder to submit.

But now another fighter is adding his opinion to the mix. Here is what Matt Hughes wrote on his website about the incident:
"Now, on to what everybody is talking about, the greasing. I’m not the only one who has said that GSP felt greasy during a fight. I know Matt Serra has mentioned it and, even in their first fight, I think BJ said something. I’m not saying GSP did something wrong and I’m not saying that it would have changed any outcomes of any fights; but what I am saying is, for my last two fights against Georges, he felt greasy."

It's here that I would like to borrow another catch phrase from Brokenstyle..."What?"

It looks like grease gate is in full swing, and we can look forward to months of accusations and finger pointing on top of a heaping pile of denial. When did the Matt Hughes fights happen? Oh that's right, over a year ago. So why it's coming out now is a bit of a stretch.

Though I'm sure St. Pierre will be made out to be the bad guy in this, the point is he's just the better fighter. Do I think he should have an unfair advantage?

Of course not.

But we have all seen the UFC behind the scenes training of GSP, and a guy that works that hard is unlikely to find a way to cheat. I don't think a bit of vaseline made Matt Hughes yell, "Tap,Tap" or BJ Penn's corner "Throw In The Towel." So let's be aware of this but let it go and look forward to Thiago Alves V. Georges St. Pierre, or BJ Penn V. Kenny Florian. That's the future, and the past is past.

Dream had it's annual New Year's fight bash which included a modern day David v. Goliath redux.

This matchup involved Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic vs Hong Man Choi, with Cro Cop giving up many pounds and inches to the gigantic Choi in a match that was more Rocky Balboa versus Hulk Hogan (or whatever Hogan's character's name was) than a meaningful mma match.

This clearly falls into the "train wreck I can't take my eyes off of".

Couture Lands Role In Major Action Movie

MSNBC.com is reporting that former UFC heavyweight and light heavyweight champion Randy Couture has secured a role in the upcoming action flick "The Expendables".

The role was originally written for Wesley Snipes and was reworked for Couture.

Unlike roles given to mma stars in the past, this $60 action movie comes with legitimate star power.

Couture will co-star with Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Oscar Award winner Forest Whitaker. Whitaker plays a cia agent while the other actors play characters in a band of mercenaries.

This is one of 3 movies that 2009 will see Couture in.

Fight For The Troops Nets $4 Million For Cause

Last week's Fight For The Troops telecast on Spike TV raised over 4 million for The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. The fund ultimately seeks to raise $65 million to build a state of the art facility to treat returning veterans suffering from TBI (traumatic brain injury), a prevalent condition resulting from attacks from IED's in the war in Iraq.

$4 million dollars sounds like a drop in the bucket, but during the telecast IFHF President Bill White stated that they had raised much of the need, and that the UFC/Spike TV fundraiser was important to help them break ground.

In addition to the great gesture for a good cause around Christmas, good MMA action, and the monies raised, maybe the biggest contribution of the event was the awareness created as to the extent of the issues that our troops suffer while fighting for us.

Ultimate 2009?...Eh

UFC 92 is coming up, and upon looking at the three main fights of the night it has me asking what really is so Ultimate? Granted there are a lot of "Big Names" on this card, but what does it really amount to?

The first and, in my opinion the most intriguing of the night, Is Wanderlei Vs. Rampage. This fight on paper has a lot of potential to be a great fight, and will probably reveal who the next contender for the Light Heavyweight challenger will be. As a lot of fight fans know these two have fought twice before in Pride. Wanderlei owned these fights, and actually knocked Rampage through the ropes. The reason that this has so much potential is because both of these fighters are a lot different than they were in their Pride days. Rampage is a more of a well round fighter, but has faced a lot of...how should i put this..."Challenges" in the past couple of months. Wanderlei while looking like the "Axe Murderer" against Keith Jardine, is not the vicious fighter he used to be. But lets face it, its not a rubber match, its not a great rivalry, just two fighters who have a lot to lose going at it.

Then there is Mir Vs. Noguiera. Here's a spoiler, it will end in a submission, or decision. Need I say more? The only intrigue in this one will be who will face Lesner. Mir being the one who has given Lesnar his only UFC defeat, or Nogueira who has tons of credibility.

Then there is the headliner of the night, Griffin Vs. Evans. While im like everybody else who likes Forrest Griffin, does Rashad Evans deserve a title shot? His only big win has been against Chuck Lidell, and he barely escaped losing to Tito Ortiz, due to a penalty to get the draw. But then again Forrest really didn't beat anyone credible other than Shogun. Jardine must be pissed.

Lets hope this fight card offers non stop action, otherwise UFC 92 wont fall under ultimate, but rather adequate.

Hello Fitch

MMA Junkie is reporting that 24 hours after leaving the UFC John Fitch is back. This time without those pesky AKA coaches and the managment team of Zinkin Entertainment. I mean can you blame the guy who wants people looking out for your best interest, when you can be part of an organization that is obviously out for theirs.

"It was all or nothing," Fitch said. "[White] wanted our lifetime he wanted our souls forever"

Dana is a businessman. Dana may also like MMA. Dana does not like MMA as much as he like buying expensive things.

Other members of the American Kickboxing Academy that are in the UFC will have to make that similar choice.

I seem to remember Dana being angry at GSP for signing with a mainstream management company. I think it was because as fighters become bigger than the organization Dana and the Zufffa clan will have to actually think of something other than lining there fat bank rolls.

I thought the picture reminded me of another sacrificial lamb. However that one was for grace not to further line the pockets of millionaires.

MMAJUNKIE.com is reporting that the UFC has given Jon Fitch, and the AKA team a notice to pack up and leave the organization.

As brokenstyle would say. What?

According to Fitch the dispute is over merchandising, and likeness rights. Dana White is saying that the AKA team, including Fitch, is not "in a partnership" with the UFC. The catch here is all of this started over likeness rights for the UFC/THQ to use in video games. Not just likeness rights but a LIFETIME of merchandising rights.

Really?

I like Dana White, and think without him MMA would still average 2,ooo PPV buys per each event. But if this is true its just ridiculous. Fitch is argueably the #2 Welterweight in the world, and just lost a hard fought war With Georges St. Pierre. If this is true then its very disappointing. Sacrificing great fights over video games, and action figures?

Remember MMA is a sport, Not a circus.

It seems that C&W artist Darryl Worley is about to scratch that itch for you. According to CMT.com's blogger Alison Bonaguro, Worley is quoted as saying " “I’ve been a fan of Mixed Martial Arts for quite some time. I jumped at the chance to get involved with Music City MMA and bring this intense sport to Nashville.”

Unless they do mma differently in Nashville, Alison confirmed she does not follow the sport very closely if she expects "headbutts" at this event however.

Fedor Loses

Heavyweight Combatants Unwind In Diverse Settings

UFC 91 heavyweight main event combatants Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar wound down from their historic matchup Saturday within the confines of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. That is where any similarity ends.

Both fighters wound down in ways that reflect their personas and lifestyles.

Lesnar, former All-American collegiate wrestling champ and WWE Pro wrestler celebrated his win with 60 of his closest family and friends in Shibuya restaurant in the hotel. He took time to graciously pose for pictures with his new championship belt with fans that approached his table.

This lowkey living has become typical of the reclusive Lesnar who has shunned the glamour of his former WWE days to a farm in Minnesota. He is not part of a fight camp, preferring to go it alone in a gym he built himself. If you want to be in that gym, you have to have an invite from the 6'3.5" 280ish hulk himself. His fight team consists of trusted coaches and trainers, most of who have known Lesnar for some time.

Couture was cheered, even in defeat, when he showed up to his own official party at Studio 54, with his wife Kim Couture on his arm. Couture, a UFC Hall of Famer, champion of two weight divisions, and veteran mma tournament participant, straddles two eras of mma history.

Officially fighter sponsored post fight party events have become lucrative revenue streams for fighters. And Randy arriving at his amid the glitz and glamor that Vegas has to offer is appropriate. The UFC and Couture are both based in Vegas. Both (UFC and Couture) have done endless brand promotion as they ascended to the top of their respective games.

It's ironic that the future of the UFC heavyweight division is a loner who after experiencing the pinnacle of fame and fortune (while in the WWE) prefers to keep to himself, while the past ambassador extraordinaire fades out to the sparkle of Las Vegas.

Affliction Founder Threatens Kim Couture, Quits Own Company

Seems that Affliction t-shirt fashion mogul and fledgling promoter Todd Beard quit his own company after an altercation with Kim Couture.

This face off did not occur in the cage, rather a face off with Couture and her counsel Sam Spira in which according to Couture Beard raged "that he would 'get' us and otherwise make us regret that we had persisted" in trying to obtain financial records on an Affliction T-shirt contract she manages featuring Randy's name and picture.

After being outed as a raging boozer via court order banning Beard, an ex-con, from approaching her (Couture), Beard said he was stepping down from the California based company he founded because "There are personal issues I must address."

Kim Couture is Randy Couture's agent and officer of Xtreme Couture Mixed Martial Arts company.

Well, there is only one thing left to say about Brock Lesnar.

Welcome.

With the second round TKO of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, Brock Lesnar has done what has been expected of him since he came into the UFC; won the title. Only I don't think fans would have expected it to happen so soon. Whether you love him or hate him, you have to respect him. No longer can you argue with whether or not Lesnar is here to stay. Many, including myself did not think that someone so new to the sport could be so effective so fast. Couture having more skill, and experience seemed comfortable and ready to keep his title going into the fight. But in the end Lesnar's size, and his Mr. Fantastic size reach were all that mattered on Saturday night.

We can now lay this fight to rest.

Next up for Lesnar will be a massive test in either Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria, or Frank Mir. Lesnar has proven that he lacks in BJJ defense which these two fighters are masters in, but by the way he is adapting to the sport I wouldnt be suprised if he picks that up rather fast.

Lesnar is the new prototype for what the UFC Heavyweight division will look like, and adds excitement to this lacking division.

On to UFC 92.

First Rule Of Fight Club.........

I was whisked away early Friday morning to Vegas to take in my first Fight Club Q&A and autograph sessions as well as the following live weigh ins.

Today's potential historic fight will only pale to the buzz of sitting through the day before activities that the UFC treats as an event unto itself.

I rolled into the MGM Grand to check in and noticed a crowd that was buzzing and growing in the lobby like always occurs when a celebrity shows up unexpectantly. It was UFC President Dana White who was taking picture after picture with fans and seemingly enjoying it more with every new fan encounter. This is the man that many contribute the current popularity of MMA to. It was refreshing to see someone enjoying their job so much.

That is much of the appeal of MMA, that anyone that is involved is usually very accessible and down to earth. Later that evening while eating at the MGM Buffett, I experienced this phenomenon myself. I was eating with my wife and fighter Hermes Franca walked past my table as I looked up. I said "Hey Hermes" and he smiled and said "Hello Sir" with a smile.

But let's get back to earlier in the day. We stood in a long line of UFC Fight Club members waiting to get into the arena for the day's activities. The line snaked around like a Disneyland qeue and we were right by a well placed souvenir booth. The air was electric as everyone anticipated what was to come. It was the hub of opinions on who would win and why.

Once in, we got a seat about six rows from the front off to stage left. I went out of the arena to an area where you could get refreshments, or meet UFC fighters Lightweight Champ B.J. Penn, Middleweight Champ Anderson Silva, Marcus Davis, and TUF 5 alum Ben Saunders. Like Dana in the lobby, these guys seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing.

The venue is divided into a 3rd by a large black curtain. Periodically you see venue and UFC personnel as well as MMA dignitaries come walking through. You could also see a partially constructed octagon, which was surprisingly exciting to this first time attender.

Mike Goldberg gets on stage and introduces former middleweight champion Rich Franklin who will answer questions from Fight Club members in today's Q&A session. Franklin, who will move up to 205 to fight Dan Henderson at UFC 93 in January is huge looking and very fit.

Fight Club members step up to microphones located in the aisles and ask mostly good questions ranging from whether Rich prefers the 205 class over 185 class to what he thought people getting into the game should focus on.

Some highlights:

> A FC member asked Rich if now that he has made the move to 205 if believed a rematch with Lyoto Machida would happen. Franklin said a rematch would be be stylistically boring. (This drew OOHs! and laughs from the crowd who thought Franklin was dissing Machida). Franklin followed up with the fact that it wasn't a criticism, rather the fact that Lyoto spends much of the time backing up and looking for spots to attack. He also said it was very effective. He said he'd fight if the UFC put it in front of him. Lyoto Machida handed Franklin his first professional defeat in 2003 at Inoki Festival. Franklin said he took the fight with 3 weeks notice and admitted he was arrogant and did not properly prepare.

> A guy asked if he could experience the devastation of a Rich Franklin punch in person, which Franklin quickly declined. Goldberg told a hilarious story of a drunken fight fan in Ireland that wanted Forrest Griffin to give him a leg kick. Forrest declined, but when the Irishman persisted Forrest obliged. The guy was walking like he was crippled but was screaming about how awesome it was. Classic Forrest.

> It is amazing the scientific approach that Rich Franklin takes to cutting weight for a fight. He documents everything he does and eats in a journal and constantly pores over them and makes adjustments if his progress is not where it needs to be. When asked about Paulo Filiho's recent match where he came in 7 pounds overweight, Franklin said he couldn't conceive how a fighter could miss the mark that much before a fight.

After the Q&A there was an hour gap where they let in the public for the weigh ins. On the multitude of big screens, they ran fighter features on Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar that have been on Spike. Spliced in the commercial breaks were spots for Harley-Davidson, Bud Light, a nutritional supplement, and Gears of War 2, which are all sponsors of this event.

The weigh ins occur as they call in the fighters one at a time, weigh them, announce their weights, and then have them pose against each other.

After Lesnar and Couture did this, Joe Rogan interviewed them beginning with Lesnar. The hometown crowd exploded for Couture and gave Lesnar some boos for his trouble. Lesnar seemed to tire of this treatment and after stating he saw his hand raised at the end of the fight, and that he would see Couture in the octagon the next night, he walked off.

Randy was typical Randy saying that this once again was a battle where people talked about his age and size disadvantage.

The Ultimate Fighter 8 Falls Short

In 2005 a reality show hit the airwaves that would change the way people looked upon the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. This show is called The Ultimate Fighter. Since then 7 more seasons have been produced, and are currently running the 8th installment.

Within these eight seasons we have seen legendary coaches Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock, Georges St. Pierre, B.J. Penn, Jens Pulver, Matt Serra, Forrest Griffin, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Frank Mir.

We have also seen a number of great fighters who have come out of the TUF program. Fighters like Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Josh Koscheck, Joe Stevenson, Rashad Evans, Michael Bisping, and Mac Danzig to name a few.

With all these great coaches and fighters, great moments are bound to come out of it. Moments like when Griffin and Bonnar fought, or when Tito and Ken started going at it, oh and who can forget when that one fighter put his semen on another fighter's sushi. Hilarious! But wait it gets better! That other fighter then eats it and has no idea! If you can't tell, i'm being sarcastic.

If you haven't watched the newest season of The Ultimate Fighter : Mir Vs. Nogueira, then you certainly are not missing out. This season has just plain fallen short of the last 7 seasons. Some of the greatest moments in TUF history have come from antics at the house, but most importantly the greatest moments have been the fights. The fights where you actually remember the fighters name, and not simply as "That One Guy." This is a FIGHT organization, not celebrity rehab, or a Kevin Smith movie. So how about next season we start from scratch, and pretend that the whole Mir Vs. Nogueira thing never happened.

Come on TUF, step your game up.

Sonnen To Face The Spider?

Newly crowned WEC middleweight (185 lbs) Chael Sonnen looks to enter the UFC and fight the current UFC champ Anderson "The Spider" Silva in his first bout.

That's a hard core welcome back to the world's top MMA promotion, since many consider Silva the top pound for pound fighter in all of MMA, much less the middleweight division.

I think this quick "you're in the UFC, you're fighting for the UFC middleweight championship" illustrates the difficulty that the UFC is having in finding competitive matches for Silva.

Sonnen won the belt (sort of) last week at WEC 36 in a win against one of Anderson Silva's best friends, Paulo Filho in a unanimous decision. I say sort of because Filho came in overweight forfeiting part of his purse and changing the fight from a 5 round x 5 minute championship match to a 3 round x 5 minute catchweight bout. In an act of good sportsmanship, Filho announced he'd hand over the belt to Filho.

This will not be Sonnen's first fight in the UFC, as he fought at UFC 55 (loss by submission to Babalu Sobral), UFC Fight Night 4 (Unanimous decison win against Trevor Prangley), and a submission loss at UFC 60 to Jeremy Horn.

Tito Back In The UFC?

The Huntington Beach Bad Boy, Tito Ortiz is guaranteeing that fans will see him back in fight action no later than July 2009 either as an employee of Affliction, or the UFC.

Since Ortiz' last unanimous decision loss to Lyoto Machida at UFC 84, he has been seen ringside at more MMA shows than Kevin James. Before EliteXC's demise, he was allegedly close to a deal with that promotion.

In early August, Tito announced he was "in line to become the highest paid MMA fighter in history when a "ground-breaking" deal between the free-agent fighter and Affliction is announced as early as Wednesday (August 6, 2008)".

The two factors that jump out at me regarding Tito's latest guarantee are 1) that he expects to heal from a back surgery in 7 months that took fellow MMA fighter Nate Quarry 15 months to recover from, and 2) that he still thinks he can come back to the UFC after his acrimonious split with that organization and it's President Dana White.

Tito is one of MMA's best known personalities whose last victory (not counting Ken Shamrock) was a paperthin and controversial split decision against current UFC champ Forrest Griffin at UFC 59. He is still a big name fan favorite amongst many fans.

A deal with Strikeforce or upstart Affliction would probably be the best fit for Ortiz as far as paydays available, as well as opportunities to extend his fight career.

EliteXC's Best Fight May Be In Court

Seems as though Proelite inc., the parent company of EliteXC, isn't quite ready to give up the ghost.

Showtime announced on October 31st that they would be auctioning off all tangible and intangible assets on November 17th. This sale is said to include fighter contracts, trademarks, names of organizations that joined the consortium, as well as various tangible assets.

This came after a notice to EliteXC contracted fighters' management on October 20th that the organization was closing it's doors.

MMAWEEKLY.com reported :
"In response, many of the managers sent a “notice of breach” letter to the company, citing a clause in the contract that permits fighters to terminate the contract and seek monies owed to them if Pro Elite isn’t able to fulfill their “promotional and payment obligations” within thirty days."

This would free fighters to fight in other promotions. But in a sudden 180 degree turnaround, Proelite has responded to these Notice Of Breach letters with letters stating they will be fighting the announced auction of assets by Showtime Networks and will in fact be promoting fights in 2009 after reorganizing.

Fighting Fedor?

Fighting Fedor. Honestly? They had the season of TUF that led to a title shot that I thought was kind of lame. Pointing out to me that MMA is not yet a sport but a sideshow. But at least the show was in the biggest organization in the world. This is a show in obscurity. The weakest division in the world of MMA (though 185 is in competition) is going to have a show to determine the best Heavyweight. It is an embarrassment. Lets create a show in 1990 called fighting the champ staring Mike Tyson. It would have been just as big of a joke.

Fedor pound for pound is the best and I am his biggest advocate. I saw the fight when he beat up on a 7 footer Hong Man Choi when Randleman dumped him on his head and he won both fight with a straight up Sambo arm bar. But honestly a reality show is exactly what MMA does not need.

MMA needs unified rules and a ranking system. MMA needs a place to fight that is not copyrighted like the octagon is.

MMA does not need a show that puts it back with the bearded lady, and the guy that can eat a bunch of hot dogs in a short amount of time.

MMA needs to be in the spotlight with MLB and the NBA. Or at least the NHL and Arena Football.

Carano Vs. Cyborg Destiny

According to Michael David Smith Gina Carano and Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino have committed to fight each other and have plans on ending up in the same organization soon.

Since Zuffa seems to be stuck in the 40’s and does not want to see two female athletes mix it up, the fight will happen in a less than major promotion. Rumors and innuendo point to Strikeforce.

Strikeforce is a mainstay in MMA but have never reached or even really strived to be a mainstream organization. Happy to be a distant second to the Zuffa based promotions Strikeforce is the underground record company that creates artists and prepares them for the mainstream. Akin to Sub Pop records that bred future giants Sound Garden, Nirvana and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Most MMA fans are just looking forward to a good fight. Opposed to the Neanderthal mind set many mainstream observers think of the sport and its fans, most of us are forward thinking people who are not hung up on things like sex or race. We applaud great athletes taking part in the most basic and ancient of sports.

According to Mr. Smith the fight may happen on one of the NBC live aired Strikeforce events.

As far as rumors go I wish this to be true more than most.

BJ Pitching Malt Liquor

BJ Penn has joined a short list of MMA fighters that are pitchmen for Mickey's. Malt Liquor has a fine history of pitchmen outside MMA with the likes of Billy D. Williams and ICE CUBE. Who else misses Ice Cube talking about the smooth taste of St. Ides?

In my younger days I was known to partake in a 40 oz or two and must say if BJ is going to sell malt liquor he made a great choice. Mickey's is the Rolls Royce of malt liquor. Forrest Griffin once graced the 24oz tall can of Mickey's and he seems to be doing OK.

One of the reasons I have such affection for the sport of MMA is that though it has definitely become a mainstream talking point, it is very rough around the edges. BJ Penn is a Kobe Bryant type superstar in his sport and is selling a beer that graces the shelves of fine establishments as Eddies Liquor, you all have them in your area you know places that their smell is part of the charm.

MMA is the wild west of sports. I hope all you fans out there remember theses days that our sport was really just finding its form, finding its place in society and the stars endorsing things like Mickey's.

Paulo came in 7 pounds over. That is not a misjudgment in training or drinking too much water, that is a straight up "I don't care".

The former training partner of Anderson Silva has nothing to lose, except part of his purse.
The fight will not be for the title that is going exist after this fight anyway with WEC dropping his weight class. It will be for........wait for it.................. Pride?

No, pride is shown from preparation and respect for your opponent. The life of an MMA fighter is one: train, two: make weight, three: fight.

I am sure that Paulo Filho is going to show up. He's a top 3 185er, as reported by most publications and internet sites, as he moves on to the UFC.

It may be the economy or it may be record breaking ticket prices. UFC 91, one of the most anticipated fight cards of the year has not sold out the MGM Grand Garden Arena. According to the Wrestling Observer they have sold just over 8,000 tickets of the 14,000 that are actually available.

In an interview with FOX News in September, Dana White claimed that the UFC will stay strong in hard economic times because it is an inexpensive form of entertainment. I hope the PPV numbers are strong. I would hate to think that MMA has already peaked.

Sharon Robb of the SunSentinel.com reports that a Kimbo Slice rematch may be in the works for New Year's Eve DREAM K-1 show with Seth Petruzelli.

Petruzelli knocked out Kimbo in 14 seconds in the last ever EliteXC show.

Petruzelli further rocked the MMA world by alleging that officials of the EliteXC offered him an incentive if he kept the fight off the ground.

The Florida State Athletic Commission later cleared the dead EliteXC organization of any wrong doing.

Seems that Brock Lesnar lawyered up and sent some attorneys to a regularly scheduled Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) to make a request.

In Lesnar's first UFC bout against former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir, Lesnar was pounding on Mir, including punches to the back of Mir's head. During the match, referee Steve Mazzagatti deducted a point from Lesnar for blows to the back of the head after warning him.

Seems Lesnar had his legal team request that NSAC remove Mazzagatti from eligibility to ref Lesnar's upcoming fight with Randy Couture. Commissioner Keith Kizer said...Uh Uh.

Mario Yamasaki was awarded the fight, but not because the request was made.

What's up with ex-street fighters and ex-pro wrestlers thinking they can have the game manipulated for them? Brock Lesnar's MMA future is bright, and he very may well come out with a win against Couture.

But focusing on a referee before a fight is bad sign that he is concentrating on the wrong things.
